Thanks for all the great responses so far, this is a fantastic site. I going to work on my chipping game hard with my 56, PW and 8i. I need to make getting up and down from 20 yards the rule, not the exception. Like one poster alluded to, I think practice therapy will be more effective right now than retail therapy.

One more ? - When using the 8i do you still put the ball on the back foot?
I mostly play each club nearly the same. The loft is what controls the carry more than any change in ball position. You can put too many variables into the shot when you start mixing lofts and ball position. When I'm facing a long chip with no rough between me and the green, I use my 8I a lot, even for 30-40 yard shots. I seem to have better control and make more consistent contact with the 8I that I do with a wedge for that type of shot. I'm less likely to chunk or skull the shot.

The coach who taught me the short game had me play all shots off of the back foot regardless of the club. I varry that sometimes depending on condition, especially for a flop shot from fluffy grass, but mostly I play everything off the back foot still. And I'll chip with any club in the bag if I think it will work best: 3-wood, 3-hybrid, 8 iron, PW, 54* SW, or 58* LW. Whatever will get me closest to the hole. Sometimes you need loft and/or spin, sometimes you want it on the ground and rolling as soon as possible, etc. Just practice with everything to get a feel for how they all react.

Spend 5-10 minutes practicing your chipping with a club you normally would not use to chip with and see what you can do with it, and vary how far away you chip from with that club while you do it. Besides being good practice it is also a fun way to break up practice and keep from getting bored.

I use a 56* anywhere from 70 yards to just off the fringe. If I am off the fringe in rough, I might use a 8 or 9 iron to roll it. Other than that, a 56* is my go to club.

If your close enough and in the FW, you could always just putt it.

I've practiced a lot around the greens in the past few years and it has really helped my game. I use my 56 probably 95% of the time but can use it in a variety of different ways. I try different shots a lot though. I've recently started using a hybrid from flat lies in the rough just off of the green - it's a fun little shot that cuts through the rough. Basically, I try lots of things but the 56 is definitely my go-to club.

I use all my wedges around the green. If the pin is closer or down hill I use my 58. Uphill or lots of green to cover I go to the gap or pw. Key to contact for me is more weight on left foot and acclerate into the ball.

Weight left and accelerate, thanks that a good thought. And thanks for the posters who gave me practice drills. I'll probably be referring to this thread often.

I love wedges. Around the green is probably the best part of my game - sadly.

I always use my 58* lob wedge on elevated greens but if its flat I play pitch and run with my 7 iron. I play more consistant that way.

I seldom use anything but my 56* or 60* anymore, even on very flat long runs to the hole. Ball always towards the back foot, but less for an open stance flop. Flat bump and run I just close the face way down and line up some what right of the Target line.

For me, it depends on if I have to carry a bunker or make sure I get the ball up I will use my 60. If I have a lot of green to work with then I will use my 54.
