Default Does your performance reflect your group?
I'm a pretty decent golfer. I'm not great but I don't suck. When I'm alone I always play the same, my shots are exactly what I expect. When I'm with better players I always make one or two great shots. When I'm with players who just started, or not very good, I find myself mishitting all the time. My swing is off, my concentration is off, everything is off.

This evening I probably played the worse 9 holes in years. Nothing was working. Every tee shot was wide , every putt was short, and I even started second guessing my stance.

Do the people you play with effect your play? If so, how do you overcome it? I'm still baffled at my play today.

I agree with this. If I play with better players I play up to their skill levels whereas with my friends who aren't very good I find myself messing around

Nope. I've played good rounds with good, bad, and myself. Same goes for the bad ones. I don't care about the skill of my playing partners as much as how the act when we play.

I usually play the same no matter who i play with. I don't play worse with bad players. I do tend to play a little better when i am with a very good golfer though.

i play better when i play with people that are better than me i actually like the challenge. and i usually don't play worse unless they are a lot worse than i am then sometimes i feel like i don't play as well. I have been told a couple times that people that are not even worse than me, see me crushing the ball and try to keep up with my distance and there game falls apart because they try swinging harder then they normally do and mishit a lot. But thats taught me to always play my game and don't try to do something thats not comfortable for me and if it isn't comfortable for me and i wanna try it to work on it at the range or practice green till i am comfortable and add that to my game.

Being around better players seems to up your game mentally, like a unconscious note to yourself that you need to play better. I take it as being around people who are more focused and in tuned with the game, and this rubs off on me. I tend to read the green more and focus on difficult shots with more certainty.

That's a very good point. The group I was with tonight started playing this spring. They were chatting while they were teeing off, walking ahead of the ball, placing their bag/cart in the middle of the fairway ahead of someone's ball, etc. I think overall it was distracting me. In fact, we had to allow two groups to pass us and I insisted on skipping the fourth hole just to give some room between us and the prior group.

Overall a disappointing evening, even though I was playing golf. Now, I'm itching to hit the course again tomorrow morning early just to "redeem" myself to...me!

I would say that I play better with my personal group compared to playing alone. Heck all three times I've broken 80 I've been with them I think it's a comfort thing.

I've played with tons of bad golfers, including myself. Nothing bothers me except poor etiquette.

Not me, I pretty much play my game, good bad or ugly has to do with my swing that day and little to do with the company I keep or the gallery gathered. In fact, my best golf comes with a competition, but that don't mean better players. Playing men's league tonight I shot 39, yet missed 6 birdie putts. I was lights out and even putting well, just could not get the ball to drop over 10 feet. I had two chips that everyone said should have dropped, but stayed on the opposite lip. I know I could have shot 35, but didn't and that was playing with two guys in mid 50's range and one who shot 45. I have enough to concentrate on, no need to worry about anyone else.

In my experience I have never come across someone who has really really bad etiquette but just with little stuff like yelling too loud and such.

I played with a guy tonight that walked on your line, walked ahead while we we hitting in to the green, talked on his phone next to play... this dude didn't have a clue, but thats men's league. Its about getting new people out there to enjoy the game, I can go for that.

In my usual group of guys I play with only myself and 1 other is not near scratch. They can rattle my cage if I am off a bit since they are rarely off. 1 guy I have never beat and another only beat him once. Watching them play is really neat. They don't do anything spectacular, they just make putts and stay out of the rough.

When I do play with higher cappers (my Dad, brother, wife, neighbors, co workers) my game is about the same. With total strangers I am not that great, self consciousness and ego get the best of me.

I don't know about groups Hankster, but I play better in tournaments. I'm just a lot more focused. I have more trouble doing that during casual rounds.

I don't find that surprising in a mens league at all. I could deal with all of that except for stepping in my line cause that could actually have an impact on my round.

I'm sure your right there, but tournaments seem to bring out the focus and sweeter swings. I concentrate on a different level, but wish I could do it all the time.

Who I play with has no effect on my game. I'm a hacker through and through.

I am even inconsistent in this but would tend to agree that I play better with better players and not so well with the newbies.

Sometimes I can just get it rolling and shoot great for me and that can be with friends or with better/worse players and plenty of times the opposite has happened.

I think I TRY harder with better players which can lead to worse play...

I recently played with a group that I don't normally play with and a couple of the guys are pretty darn good. I played horribly. I was so concerned about trying to hit it well, I just couldn't. I think I would do better now with them, but man it razzled me. When I play with the normal guys I play with I'm pretty well at ease and usually do alright for me.
