Default Yardages? what's normal? long? short?
alright, I'm in the process of dialing my distance with my clubs. I feel like I'm starting to get decent contact with the clubface. my Pro recommended that when in doubt, club up. yesterday's round, I wrote down a rough estimate on my yardages....

56* - around the green
A - inside 100 yards
P - 100 yards
9i - 110 yards
8i - 120 yards
7i - 130 yards
6i - 140 yards
5i - 150 yards
4h - 165
3h - 180
5w - 195
3w - 210
Driver - 220 to 250 depends on how good I hit it

my main concern was the irons. it seems off to me. I always thought I was able to hit 7i 140 yards. a couple of questions? do these numbers look alright for a beginner (2011 is my 2nd full season)? is it better to go long or short? is it safe to assume 10 yards between irons and 10-15 yards between hybrids/fairway woods?

any help or input is appreciated. Thanks.

64* - 70 and less(Don't know since I just bought it)
60* - 85 and less
A - inside 125 yards
P - 130-145 yard
9i - 150 yards
8i - 175-195 yards
7i - 200 yards
6i - 215 yards
5i - 225 yards
4i - 230
3H- 235-250
3w - 250
Driver - 270-290

Hope I help somehow.(I am 20 with a good back/am healthy) so I am sure those yardages will go down when I'm older haha

These numbers range on my round. Because sometimes I have a tendency to overswing. But I am still learning that by not overswinging I can have been contact and still get the same distance and save my energy for the later holes. I believe having 10-15 yards between each club is a good number atleast in my experience those seem like good number for you in your 2nd season. Just keep at it, the game takes years to master. Hence why someone can not always shoot under par over a yearly basis.

Wow, 195 yard 8 iron? Amazing. That is longer carry than most of the Tour players I have played with by a good margin.

I did a quick google search and found this chart... While it's about as accurate as an internet golfers admitted distance, it does show a pretty logical dispersion of distances..

Club Men
Driver 200-230-260
3-wood 180-215-235
5-wood 170-195-210
2-iron 170-195-210
3-iron 160-180-200
4-iron 150-170-185
5-iron 140-160-170
6-iron 130-150-160
7-iron 120-140-150
8-iron 110-130-140
9-iron 95-115-130
PW 80-105-120

I don't want to be a buzzkill or doubt anyones yardages, but I don't think this is the best question to ask on the internet. Even if people are being honest about their yardages most people use the max yardage they can hit a club as their average so the answers won't do much to help you figure out what people average. So just take everything regarding yardages with a grain of salt.

Good to see - I am pretty much dead on with the last number for each row. So instead of retyping everything, there is my answer!

MD177 - also important to note that some golfers really change the loft of a club through their swing. Hence the ability for some average golfers to hit a 9 iron with 6/7 iron distance. I used to hit an 8 about 165 because I would deloft the club. Now that I dont do that, I am right at 140.

thanks guys. this thread is not about questioning anyone's numbers. I just want to get an idea if my numbers are somewhat similar to an average golfer.

Candan: thanks for the numbers.

--- is it better to go long or short? All depends on your course. Where the danger is, etc. Many greens slope back to front so it would typically be easier playing from the front side and putting/chipping uphill.

--- is it safe to assume 10 yards between irons and 10-15 yards between hybrids/fairway woods? For me, that is fairly accurate.

It depends where the trouble is. Is there water long? is there water short?

Nothing is ever safe to assume anything.
pls answer these q's too.

Weird gaps in there. 195 yard 8 iron and then the PW is 100, that's just odd to me. But 5 yards between the 4 and 5. Hey, whatever works.

I did answer yours but just in my opinion/experience. And I wouldn't say my numbers are anything good? I can see my numbers are right on yours thainer so it's nothing too shocking. But what I am proud of is the fact that I can be able to hit the ball like I do after playing baseball in high school and playing golf consistently for almost 2 years, even though I did play before high school.
I tried to post my best averages(hence why my 8I is just a range cause that club I can't control for some reason compared to my 9I which I know is a 150 yard avg.)
