Default Handicap ?
When I used to play golf all the time as a teenager I played off 8

Having just returned to the game is it right that I should start from 28 (default men's handicap for those without one) and then let my score cards work out what my current handicap is.

There is no way that I can play to 8 at the moment but I don't want to take the mick out of my playing partners as I am not a 28 handicapper either

My last 3 cards would put me off 18 but for some reason the online handicap site I am using has me playing off 23 at the moment

Thoughts ???

How are you determining that you would be an 18?

I think most people assume that an index is an average in many ways of ones scores. When in reality it is not an average, but the potential one has to score.

That's what I really want to do but I am not a 23 handicapper either to be honest. Once I have played a few more rounds I am hoping that a proper handicap will be given to me

I just don't want to be getting given too many shots by my playing partners when we tee it up

What online handicap system so you use btw?

I am not, the online handicap site is by the cards I have submitted

It's just they also have me playing off 23

Feel free to send me the details and I will look them over. More than happy for you to refer if I go down that route

Not sure how you could have a handicap yet as most clubs require 5 or 6 scores minimum be turned in and then it has to be reviewed and a handicap issued, that usually happens maybe once a month depending on who is doing it. I have never heard of a men's default handicap, not sure what that is.

It's an online handicap site, I am not a member of any club. The site I used gave a default handicap of 28 for any Adult Men without a current handicap.

I remember getting my first handicap after submitting 3 score cards when I was a junior (handciap was 16)

Not sure I understand the issue. Your index is what it is if you are accurately posting scores. The only way to a lower index is by playing better golf.

I am putting in accurate scores, guess I will just have to play to what the site is saying my current handicap is (time to take some money from the playing partners )

I have no issue playing to 23 as I know it will soon drop down to what I consider to be a more accurate representation.

After 15+ years away and the fact that I am getting older, I can't expect to play golf to the standard that I used to play

Just enter your scores into oob or something similar for bragging rights. It only takes 5 rounds to get a good idea. Mine went up for quite awhile as I logged em in till I got 20 rounds. If you don't agree with the numbers you can always adjust them to your liking.

This is true as well, and I am honestly not sure of the difference between the two. It has something to do with category of players and how you score versus the course handicap on any given day. I think.

I am using myonlinegolfclub for my scores and it appears to use the CONGU handicap system

No reason to play worse when you are older necessarily - I will be 58 in October and play better than I ever have. Lots of stretching to stay flexible.

There is some truth in this statement. I'll be 50 in five months and I'm still playing the same tees I did when I was 20. It only gets tougher, distance wise as we get older. At age 55 at my home course, we can officially move up to the senior tees for all events. It will be nice.

I've been as low as 5 or 6 HC in my life, but it is hard (for me at least) to get back down now days. There is a reason the pro's have a 50 and over tour. We are no different.

I am not sure, but I think our system requires 10 scores posted before it issued my index when I started.
