I am normally a bad green side bunker player. I can never hit behind the ball and always hit it way to far. Well I am not sure what has happened but for the last 4 rounds I have been in about 18 bunkers and I have not only gotten out but I am getting the ball about 3 feet from the pin. My buddies even asked if I had been taking lessons. I told them it is just the new Nike sand wedge that I got and watching a little golf channel for tips. I have such good confidence now when I get into a bunker.
Well yesterday we played 18 and my chipping which is so bad (i am working on it) was real bad and after about 3 holes it was getting to me. My buddy suggest that I start aiming over the bunkers when hitting into the green and if I am short I can hit out of the bunker since I am doing so good at it now. I took his advice and did just that. I landed in 7 bunkers for the rest of the day. On each one I got out and put it close and saved par or bogey. I almost wanted to hit the ball out of the bunker. I broke 90 for the first time in months doing this. Shot an 86! it was BUNKERRIFIC |

That is great for you but I just don't understand how you can be so good from the bunker and not be able to chip. The chip is a much more controlled shot to me. |

Visualize the shot and pick an area to land the ball, then be sure to hit down on the chip and don't flip your wrist. Try that and see if it helps. Also be sure to turn your chest as you swing the club, don't hit at the ball with your arms. There are lots of great instructional videos on the net that will have you chipping pretty well with just a little practise.

My home course has no sand bunkers, so I'm far from an expert on sand shots and it is something I never practice. When I do play somewhere with bunkers I work very hard to avoid them, but sooner or later I end up in one.
I like what DawgDaddy says about visualizing the shot, and picking a spot to land it. I play these sand shots with the ball back a little, making sure to hit behind the ball and swinging all the way thru, splashing the ball out with plenty of sand. Works for me when I need it. |
