Before play, I like to hit the range mainly to warm up. There's not usually enough time to work on anything substantially. It's supposed to just get me in the groove as it were.... it rarely helps.

It's 50/50 around here.

None of the munis provide free range balls. Heck, most of them don't even have ranges at all.
The semi-private courses, some do and some don't. Just depends on the course. I've played $30 a round places that will let you hit free balls all day long and I've been to $80 courses that want $7 for a small bag of about 20 balls.
The private courses.............well I don't know. I'm not that "privileged" to play any of them or know any members...

The courses in northern NJ have very few places that provide range balls included in the price of the round. Like tdibr, none of munis provide free range balls nor have ranges. The expensive courses are a mixed bag. Ballyowen privides range balls BUT it cost $125+ per round! The places I usually play don't have ranges.

The threshold here in our area is a $40.00 green fee. Courses that charge over $40.00 to $50.00 range use is included with your round. The next level is about $80.00 green fee which will include range use, bag pick up & drop off and post round club cleaning.

Aside from outings, the only place I've played that comp'd range balls was TPC Deere Run. They gave you a small bag for a warmup. The munis around here probably need that extra money. I usually warm up on the range about 50% of the time anyway, so I usually don't care.

Really makes no difference to me either. Blame it on my beat up 53 year old body but I have to hit at least 30 balls to get zoned in for a round of golf that I intend to score well at. I do play with one friend who does not like hitting range balls before a round. I end up hitting balls in my practic area at home before heading to the course when playing with him.

It varies around here. The local munis do not include range balls. The price of golf and cart is very good (~$40 for a great course), the price for range balls is not ($5 for a small bucket). The private courses I have been to will just have them sitting at the range. I have played the 'resort/tourist' courses in Branson and Lake of the Ozarks and they usually include range balls. It can be pretty expensive to play these places so the cost is built in I'm sure, plus they need to make a nice impression on people so they come back and/or tell their friends. Some just give you a small bucket, but others just have balls sitting in the hitting area and you can hit as many as you want.

My personal feeling is if you have to pay $60 or more, the range balls should be included.

Only time I have gotten free range balls is when I'm taking lessons at the course (or did take lessons) and the instructor is there. I'll usually get one or two buckets for free.

Around here it's $5 to $8 for a large bucket and they are all odds and ends balls fished out of the water. No pretty pyramids of balls to be found.
