Default That's Good
Sorry...Beginner question here: If, say, my 5th stroke is a putt that stops 18 inches from the hole and my playing partner says, "That's good", does that mean that I score it as a 5 or does it mean that I don't need to take the short putt and just record a 6?

Thanks.

Record the six. It is a gimmee, so you dont have to make the putt, but still have to score as if you did.

As said above. Score it a 6.

Thanks, all. That's what I thought but I wasn't sure.

Agree with the 6 but I would suggest just going ahead and putting all of those anyway. It will improve your putting and when you do have to putt those short ones you won't be worried about it. Sometimes those gimmie putts aren't so easy :P

it's a 6.but as others suggest it's better to putt it out.For practice and to get a true score so you can better judge on whether you game is improving or not. When you do gimmes and mulligans you can't judge just how much your improving or declining. When you put a true score down it's much easier to judge.
But on another note take the gimme cause if it's a 2 inch putt and someone offers a gimme and you don't take it 50-50 chance you'll miss

+1000! I play with a guy that's always asking "Is that good?" on his own putts, a lot of the time from tough spots. I finally laughed and told him yes, take all those you want so I can beat you when we have money on the line and you have trouble with them, haha.

Yah it cracks me up when people ask if their own putts are good.

At least they ask
got a buddy who just picks them up .I got on him.He said "I never miss them that close"
Well to make a long story short when we hooked up with some other buds and played skins he missed every one that close

I don't have a problem with someone telling me "it's good". I do have a problem when they smack the ball back at me at the same time. I rather enjoy the sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup. And since my putting is rather weak I'd like all the practice I can get, even if it's only from 10 inches.

I agree. I'd rather just putt out. If someone feels the need to take gimme's they don't need me to tell them its good.

Same here...I hate that too when they don't give you a chance to putt out.Not for the same reason,I feel my putting is my strong point and it's that because I don't like gimmes

Unless it's an actual match play situation and the putt has been conceded, I will always putt it out. Conceding a putt in stroke play is invalid anyway, and I'd prefer to avoid the habit of not holing out.

Having never played a match play event, that thought never occurred to me. That said, I often see the pro's take the putt even after it's been conceded. Or retaking a missed putt and losing the hole.

I agree too.
It is a 6 but an illegal 6. If you don't putt the ball in, it's not a legal score and cannot be posted for your handicap.
Always putt everything out, no matter how short the putt is. There is no such thing as a "gimme" in stroke play.

Not exactly sure what you're saying here. Once a putt is conceded in a match, the player can pick up or play it out, but his score for the hole remains the same. A conceded stroke cannot be declined, nor can it be rescinded. Once the concession is made the hole is over the player receiving the concession.

I don't know what you mean by a player retaking a missed putt and losing a hole. I think what you're seeing is a player losing the hole by missing the putt (or possibly having the next putt after the miss conceded for a halve), then just trying it again for practice. Practice is allowed by the rules on or around the green just played or on the next tee box unless it is prohibited as a condition of the competition.
