Default When should you join a course?
Long story short, My buddy is a member of a local course www.golfcannonridge.com. This course is about 20 mi from my house, however I pass it on my way home from work and use the range their 2-3 times a week. I figure I am spending about 30-40 dollars just for range balls. I love the course and they treat me very well. I just have a problem committing to the 2000 grand. Any advice would be helpful.

how many rounds would you put in if you were a member? is it $2000 up front or for the season? monthly dues? $35/week in range balls? if so...that's darn near $2000 a year if you do it every week.

It really depends what someone wants out of a membership. If going into a membership you are looking at it from a dollars and cents, it is usually not worth it. Even if you save a few dollars, you are pencilled in to playing the same course. But if you are looking at it from the rest that goes on with a golf membership (the lifestyle), you will usually be happier at a private course or with a membership.

With memberships can come leagues, private games, new playing partners and friends, club activities, etc...

If I am paying $2000 I am going to try to get at least 2 full rounds in a week, and I think it $180 a month to pay over the year. I think I am going to go with the membership, but I am nervous I feel like I am getting married again.

Thanks

But if you find out you made a mistake this commitment only lasts a year and costs you only 2k.

Getting a membership was the best thing I ever did. I play a lot more than I did... Some of your range sessions will turn into playing 9 holes instead, because it's not going to cost you anything. And some of those days where the weather is questionable you'll find yourself going out and playing, because who cares if you get rained out. Beyond that I've gotten to know a bunch of the other guys at the course and we will get a skins game going... Or we'll get together to play in a tournament together at the course.

I've had some sort of membership for nine of the last eleven years. I can't imagine not having one. As JB pointed out, it's about more than the golf. You meet people, the staff treats you well, and perks like a practice facility are hard to beat. It's usually easier to set tee times, and most places give you pro shop credit when you spend money. At my last club when it was all said and done, it probably cost us me $35-$40 per round and then there's the perks.

2 grand seems like a great price compared to some of the courses that want way more
