Default Labrum Tear
I have had problems with my shoulder for years but I always seem to be able to play golf and do normal day to day things without much problem...however, it has gotten progressively worse and this year it started causing me trouble sleeping etc... Well I went to the doctor last week and I have been diagnose with a "labrum tear". The surgery is out-patient and is orthoscopic, however, the recovery is TERRIBLE...I will be in a sling for 3-4 months and the doctor said I will probably not be able to swing a golf club until April... My surgery is planned for December 21st as I wanted to get it done ASAP. I plan to keep tabs through the "Hackers Paradise" and hopefully I will be better then before...

Wow, sorry to hear the news ZM_. It's looking like April until we can go back out up here as well, but we don't have to see the beautiful weather outside while we wait.

Hope it goes well for you. Get well soon and Good luck.

Get better soon. We wish you all the best.

I see you updated your bag again (twice in 2 months) and now are going with the R9 irons that many of us are loving.

Man that really sucks. You know my left shoulder and right elbow constantly hurt me but I refuse to go get them checked out. My g/f said is just b/c I'm a stuborn man but I think it is the thought of being laid up for a few months not playing golf. It is a very scary thought. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Thanks...this really sucks but I got to do what I got to do.

Yeah...I have been in a state of confusion for a while as I continued to take lessons and learn more and more about ball striking but bascially what has happend is that I found out (pretty quickly) that the Srixon I-701 Tour irons were not much different then my Titleist ZM's...I had decided that my goal with ball striking is that I want to hit the ball straight (no real desire to work the ball which is what the Srixon/Titleist irons were good for) and I want to have good solid distances. My short game is very solid so if I can improve my ball strking I can possibly play this game at the level I would like to. So I started looking at GI irons and ended up testing the R9 versus the R9 TP. The TP reminded me quickly of my Srixon/Titleist irons and I also enjoyed the ball speed and forgiveness of the R9. The R9 still has somewhat of a "traditional" look at address (a little biger then the TP) and the offset is less then most GI irons that I looked at. So I decided to make the change not knowing that I was going to be out of action for a while (found out a couple of days later). I will be looking forward to the spring and being able to put some time into these irons

I hear you as I thought maybe I just had tendenitis or somehting and they could give me some medicine and maybe I need to take a few weeks or a month off to let it heal but not this...kind of freaked me out...

Who is really freaking out is my wife as she is not looking forward to me not being able to do anything for 3-4 months...I will go CRAZY...

Good luck with your surgery and recovery. Since you're in Florida and the weather is conducive to golf year-round, I can understand your frustration about not playing golf for a few months!

I injured my rotator cuff in the gym back in April (tore the supraspinatus tendon by being dumb). After about a month the initial inflammation went down and I was able to play a little golf. I finally had the surgery to re-attach the tendon in September and right now I'm about 80% after lots of good physical therapy. I'm able to swing my Momentus - at a slow speed - a few times. It'll be a couple more months before I'd be able to swing a club at full speed. It's OK though, because I don't play golf here after October typically due to the weather.

I'm surprised that you have to wear a sling for so long. My surgery was conventional - not orthoscopic - and I was in a sling for only a month.

The reason is that the way the labrum heals is that it has to adhere to the bone so the recovery is as follows:

First 4-6 weeks - no movement to let it adhere to the bone
Next 4-6 weeks - physical theraphy moves it for me
Next 4-6 weeks - I start to move it on my own

The more I think about it the more I realize that this is really going to SUCK!!!

I'm so sorry--I wouldn't wish that sort of recovery on anyone.

I'm REALLY sorry for your wife. Is this your dominant shoulder? If so, she's really going to have to do everything for you.

Hopefully not EVERYTHING. A friend's wife broke both arms in a fall. He had to do everything for her. And by everything , I mean EVERYTHING you use your arms and hands for. Yes, that too. And that, and even that! Now that's true love.

Good thing I got the sidewalk cleared. Poor Liz falls and ... I guess I'd be in the same boat, lol.

Being the sole helpmate to someone who is temporarily incapacitated can take a toll. Still, it beats the alternative.

Last year, Hubby tore one of the two tendons that connects the bicep to the shoulder. Shortly thereafter, he came down with shingles. I pretty much wanted to take him out back and shoot him.

Ive been having shoulder pain in my left shoulder for a few years now and never really thought much of it either. Its to the point that I cant sleep on my left side because of the pain. Is this like what you had? How did they figure it out?

You are not alone my friend. I am currently recovering from cubital tunnel surgery (ulnar nerve) on my left elbow, and as soon as I can use it, I am scheduled for right elbow surgery (ulnar collateral ligament). Granted, it is much easier in my case where I really can't play until April, but I was hoping to undertake a swing speed program this winter. You made the right decision. I tried to play this year with a bad wing, and when you want to bomb one, or try and muscle one out of the rough, you develop a flinch, and it eventually led to me developing the dreaded flip.

First of all I want to say WOW! I am overwhelmed by everyone's concern for my situation...I simply posted to let everyone know I would be out of action for a while and did not expect such nice responses...thank you very much and it truly proves what a nice bunch of people there are on the Hackers Paradise!!!

I'm so sorry--I wouldn't wish that sort of recovery on anyone.
Thank you and you don't even know me...Ha! Ha!

This part I feel really bad about because my wife works hard (at work) and for our family and I hate the thought of putting any more burden on her but I guess that is part of being in a relationship in that you are there for each other as I would do this for her without even thinking twice...
