Default Range Time Fun
Today GG and I went over to the range to try out some clubs we are reviewing. After doing that, we decided to have a little chipping competition on the range. The 50 yard marker is a whie sign that is about 2 feet by 3 feet and the first one to hit it one. To make it fair, she got 2 balls for every one of mine. She lost a close battle and is now out walking Ellie because of it.

When leaving, she said how much she enjoyed little games on the range to make things more interesting. So the question is, when at the range, what do you use the time for?

If I do it's just to warm up but that's not very often. It seems that I'm only allowed so many good shots a round and I don't want to waste them on the range! LOL

with my short irons I usually try get as close as I can to the flags or markers they have set up. To change it up I'll try using the wrong club like a 7 when it should be only a PW. My favorite is when they go to pick up balls. Target practice!

I put "games and competitions" but, that's just because I don't know what to fit it into and the fact that I do a number of those things when I go.

My favorite thing, I read about it somewhere and tried it and love it, is to "play simulated holes". I actually start with a drive and visualize different locations and scenarios for following shots and what clubs would be proper, do this all the way down to a chip. I like it b/c it keeps me from just hanging on one thing, I get a little work with them all. Different, but works for me.

With my game I can't afford not to be on the range. Working on various things (not all at one sitting of course) but also making sure it's not all serious I'll lighten it up a bit by just doing whatever at the end of sessions.

I really enjoyed playing games out there. It made the range sesson so much more fun and helped me working on my aim and distance control. I definitely want to do things like that more often it really made the range sesson enjoyable.

I love the little games too, one I really enjoy that I just made up last year works like this.

The first shot is a hook/draw, who ever can make it turn over the most or draw it the most wins and gets a point.

The second shot is a fade, who eve can make it fade the most gets a point

The third shot is a high shot, who ever can hit it the highest with that club gets a point

The fourth is the lowest shot.

It's fun because you can go through all your clubs and try.

There is no single answer because it depends on the circumstances.

-If it's between rounds, then I'm there to work on specific things and to basically keep my swing tuned up.

-If it's just before a round, then I'm just there to warm up and to check my ball flight and distances for the day.

-If it's after a round, then I'm usually there to either reinforce what I did correctly, or fix what I did incorrectly. In my opinion, the last one is the most important. I always try to go to the range immediately after a round because all of what's gone on earlier is still fresh in my mind and it's much easier to address specific things.

i voted for mechanics and swing honing but i also love to play games and have competitions. my brother was in town yesterday afternoon and we played 9 holes, then had a chipping competition on the range. it was fun and i believe it makes you concentrate a little more. i'll end every range session hitting every iron in my bag to 100 yards, i think it's cool to be able to consistently hit a 4 iron 100 yards if i want to.

Before a round, it's just warm up... I might have one or two last minute thoughts I'm trying to get through my thick skull. On days where I don't have time to play it's purely to hone my swing and work on whatever the thought(s) of the week is...

2 different threads. One is asking if you actually practice and this has a poll about whether or not you play games.

I can probably score that point pretty easily.

I put swing training, but I did have a couple mini contests with my friend this year. Our indoor range has flags that are stuck in buckets. We try to see who can chip or pitch the ball and hit one of them.

Mechanical. Keeping the drives straight and chipping into the nets is my main goal. But I will also work adjustments in grip and stance.

But I usually go on my own. If I was there with someone and could try some games, I think that would be fun as well as useful.

Thanks for the idea JB, usually we just go to the range to hit ball and/or warm up. But that's a great idea, nothing like a friendly competition between the BF and I It'll be fun!

i use the range for many different reasons. most frequently, its to warm up before a round, which i honestly dont take too seriously. in my opinion, warming up is called warming up for just that reason, you arent going to be hitting wedges and irons right on the stick every time and the driver wont go straight down the middle of the range 280 yards. i use my warm up as more of a time to stretch and get my body loose. and most of the swings are taken at 75% cuz its much easier to start out with solid contact and straight shots with that speed. a small tip to anybody who is struggling with the question of why they kill it on the range then go to the course right after and blow up: NEVER base your mindset of how you will play that day on how you warmed up. i have warmed up hitting it left and right with a few shanks here and there and shot even or under. but i have also hit ever shot near perfect on the range then played poorly. going into every round with the same mindset and readiness to play is key.

when im not using the range to warm up, i mostly use it to check my mechanics/fundamentals. often during these times if necessary i will tinker, but only very lightly. most of that is done with my coach during lessons or with my club fitter who is also a really good person to check my swing. as we all know though, the putting/chipping green is what counts most!

there are sooo many reasons i hit the range...
boredom...
working out kinks...
trying new things...
necessity...
too much time to kill but not enough time to get in 9...
when my brothers or friends are in town and we dont have time to play a quick 9/18... we'll hit the range for a half hour or so and play games... usually for who's going to pay for lunch/dinner/drinks etc
