I golfed with a "Montana Rancher" visiting Vegas today. He comes to Vegas twice a year he said, because he likes to golf here, and play black jack. Plus he said he, and his wife were looking for some warmer weather. The guy shot a legit 62, bumpy greens and all. 9 birdies, and 9 pars. It was something awesome to watch. Every shot he took was pretty much on the money. I don't think he had a putt of more the 8' all day.
Here's the kicker. He was what I consider average in distance with any of his clubs. 230 off the tee, down to about a 100 yard PW. The fact is he was very accurate with all his clubs. he was hitting bump, and run shots with a 5 wood of all things. Another thing I noticed was his address position, which was not average by any stretch. He had decidedly closed stance, with a decidedly hooded club face. The club face was always square to his target, and he never missed his target by more than a few feet. Another thing was he only played with 9 clubs. I asked him where he learned to golf, and he said he started swinging a club as a youngster growing up on the farm. One of his earliest chores he told me was his Dad made him walk the fence line of their property. He would take a 4 iron with him, hitting balls along the fence line. He said he figured out at an early age, that keeping the ball's flight in line with the fence, saved him a lot of lost balls. Also that the 4I serve a dual purpose when would run into snakes. He figured he had been swinging clubs for 45 years just about every day doing this fence line thing. His stance, and club face alignment was how he taught himself to keep his ball flight in line with the fence. He says he shot an 80 the very first time he ever golfed on a real, 18 hole course at the age of 16. I asked him with his golf game why he never played professionally. He told me pro golf was not something he thought he would enjoy. Plus he said he never played HS, or College golf. Said he would not be comfortable, being a rancher, and trying to fit in on any pro tour. We are meeting up again tomorrow for another round, and I have no reason to believe he won't break 70 again. Myself, even though I was 9 shots better than my Monday round, I was still pathetic, getting beat by 20. ![]() |

That is amazing! Let us know how he does next round Provisional, i'm curious if that was a one time thing or pure skills. |

Even the pros find it tough to follow up a super low round with another, unless it's the Bob Hope Classic! He might do it, but I'd be more surprised to hear that he came within a shot or two or three of that than if he shot around a 70. .... I made a mistake earlier: Take him to the cleaners, provisional! ![]() |
