Default TPC Sawgrass in Trouble?
TPC Sawgrass Marriott files for bankruptcy - Tours News - Golf.com

The Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa, where nearly 300 media gathered last month to report on Tiger Woods' first public appearance since confessing to affairs, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The Marriott is located down the street from PGA Tour headquarters, and the majority of guests are there to play the TPC Sawgrass.

Jeff Mayers, the hotel's general manager, said the economic climate and failure to reach a restructuring agreement with lenders led to the bankruptcy protection. He expects no change in daily operations.

David Pillsbury, the president of PGA Tour Golf Course properties, says it should have no bearing on the golf course, which is home to The Players Championship. He says the TPC Sawgrass is independently owned and managed by the PGA Tour.

What will be interesting is how the owners of the resort will treat the agreement with the PGA Tour. Currently, the owners have the exclusive right to 85% of the starting tee times each day at the Stadium Course and Valley Course.

And, to anyone out there who may have gift cards to the resort. I wouldn't worry quite yet. They are seeking authority to honor your gift cards.

What it's a sign of is that people are finding out that is just isn't worth it to pay a premium price to play a golf course that isn't any nicer than any of a dozen others that cost half as much. Especially a course which is so difficult that the average player has trouble actually enjoying it.

That's how I see it anyway.

It's a shame, I was there for a wedding in 2002 (before I got into golf, unfortunately) and thought everything from the course to the hotel was top notch

I have said this before. GG's old teacher worked there and holds the front 9 course record with a 29. Unbelievable.

It is top notch. Unfortunately any thing that is kept in top notch shape cost more money than say a "middle notch" property would. Right now, folks with money are just not spending it, and those who don't have money can't spend what money they have on anything but necessities. Myself, I can play golf for (2 rounds a week) the next 12 months, for $11.50 a round, walk or ride, as many times as I want, Monday-Friday, after twilight. Of course the greens suck right now on this cheap course, but they will improve as the weather does. It also makes it easier for me to digest an occasional $50-$100+ course I might decide to play.
