Poll to go along with discussion thread.

Are you right handed playing right handed clubs?
Are you right handed playing left handed clubs?
Are you left handed playing left handed clubs?
Are you left handed playing right handed clubs?

*note: option 3 in poll should read:

haha, there's that subconscious anti-lefty bias pervasive in the golf industry ...

third option is supposed to be like it reads in the first post:

Are you left handed playing left handed clubs?

(someone ask JB or whoever else fixes user mistakes to fix that poll option to read correctly; I don't see where I can edit it after making it)

yeah, i'm sure JB can get that fixed. yes, i'm a lefty playing lefty, although i shoot guns and a pool cue right handed, dunno why. i've always played sports left handed but when i first got into golf i tried it right handed and it was just ugly. i've never felt that uncoordinated before. I like being a lefty but sometimes wished i was a righty, ya'll have it made when it comes to equipment.

I can't answer the poll correctly being ambidextrous I don't just know which I truly am. When I first started in school in the 50's I started to write with my left hand but was told to use my right. I think my whole household is nuts...my wife is a true lefty but plays all sports right, my oldest son is a righty who plays sports left except for throwing and my youngest son is a true righty he does everything with his right hand. This must have been caused by having a Yank for a Dad and a Canadian for a Mom.

why so much love for lefties playing righthanded? I noticed you have two choices for that scenario.Being right handed I feel slighted and descriminated against.

I do about some things that involve aim or skill left handed and some right handed. Sort of a right/left schizo I guess. Technically I am probably right hand dominant because I write that way today. I don't know if I was changed from lefty to righty but a lot of that was going on in the 50s, you are right about that.

If I was young enough to start all over again, I might just switch to left handed. I am so right hand dominant that trying to hit with my right side from the top of the swing has always been the bane of my golf game. I would probably have less difficulty overall if I just switched and used my strong right side to pull the club through instead of pushing it.

But I'm not about to start a major swing change experiment at 63.

Something you might want to experiment with, which isn't as big a change as switching dexterity of clubs, but might reap similarly big rewards, is to use a golf glove on your right hand (rather than left hand).

Doing this will put "more feel" in your left hand (because of the direct contact between your skin and the grip without the soft feel of the glove).

And wearing the glove on the right hand will "lessen feel" (of course because the grip will feel softer with a glove on that hand).

The reason I suggest this (and do it myself as well), is because with more feel in the left hand, it makes your weaker less dominant hand (and even arm and side for many people) more pronounced in feeling, and subsequently makes it want to be stronger.

While the right hand with the soft glove on, feels more subdued and therefore less dominant feeling, and will become less likely to overpower your swing.

It's at least worth trying while practicing. If even you just put on your left hand glove backwards on your right hand, and then swing a club in your yard or at the range to get that feeling, you will notice the difference.

I promise you, not only will your left hand will feel more dominant (in some cares much more dominant), but also as mentioned your left arm and entire left side will feel more dominant. And of course that will help your left side more actively pull the club through impact for better contact.

I don't wear a glove at all. Can't stand the feel of them.

Ha, no gloves, no problem.

I've read squeezing the grip firmer in the left hand also contributes to more left hand (arm and side) dominance as well. So maybe you can try that. It works on a similar idea (though of course the problems of tight grip become an issue then).

Even if you just place a handkerchief in your right palm to soften the sensation in that hand when you grip the club, and therefore strengthen the sensation in your left hand, that would work too. See how that feels, and if it translates to more left side control.

Of course you don't want to play with a glove on either hand if it doesn't feel good to you. But it might be a useful training aid or method (to switch your glove wearing hand) so you get a better feel for what left side control should feel like, and in some cases even help develop it (if that's something you have some trouble with).

I screwed up the poll results by picking #3 before I read the thread and realized two were the same.

I'm a lefty who plays righthanded. Massive mistake. The lead hand should not be the strong hand. I've always been erratic and it's traceable to the back of the left hand. Sometimes it will be docile but normally it insists on being too involved, turning in one direction or the other like tennis or ping pong where I play lefty.

I've never been surprised that Mickelson is inconsistent. He's got the same dynamic, his strong hand in front as a righty who plays lefty.

I putt lefty, and lately I'm experimenting with lefty chipping. But full swings are a disaster and I can't get myself to start over after 40 years.

interesting opinion ... i think one reason why the lead hand is desired to be the strong hand is because when the bottom hand is the strong hand, it tends to take over the swing too much ... and without a compensating move, the swing goes across the line through impact (and is the particular kind of cause for slicing that's prevalent with amateurs) ...

with that said ... i don't think playing golf for 40 years should deter you from making a switch if you believe in it strongly enough ... some people don't start playing until they're 50 some years old ... and become quite skilled in a very short period of time ...

i have an idea ...

how about thp sponsors its own "The THP Project" ... get that resident teacher Andy from the Ask The Pro thread to be like Hank Haney ...

one of the people who want to switch from left to right or right to left can be the contestant ...

it'll be viral in weeks !!!
