Diane's post on the wrath of the Golf Gods prompted this. I figure there must be another side of the coin other wise the Golf gods are just evil and live to vex us.
I played a 9 hole round back in 08 and I went on the last 3 holes, all par 4s, birdie, par, birdie. Including sinking a 40 foot putt on #9. To put in perspective, I'm a 36 index today and I was worse then. I have 3 birdies to my name total. Pars are rare for me still. So anyone else see a good side to the golf gods? |

I experience these moments often. On my last outing before the courses closed I had 2 instances where someone was looking out for me. For the first time, I was in the rough behind a patch of trees. I was just going to try and punch it under the trees and back into the fairway. I accidentally came down and pinched the ball to launch it into the air and right at the trees. The ball shot right through and landed 12 ft. from the pin. The other miracle of the day was when I bladed my wedge shot toward the green. It rocketed into the bunker, then popped up and rolled within 10 ft. of the hole. Call it dumb luck or the kindness of the Golf Gods, but something was going for me that day.

Some pro said, and I paraphrase, "the more I practice, the luckier I get".
Still, there are days where the ball bounces the best possible direction and other days where it just won't behave no matter what. All of us have experienced that and no matter how good you are, luck plays a part. I remember when Charles Howell lost a tournament because he hit a rock in front of the green and ricocheted back in the water. You can call that a poor shot, but I have also seen them hit a rock and land on the green. Neither shot was a good one, but the results were certainly different. |

I'm not sure anyone really wants to assign credit for good things to someone or something else. Except for luck perhaps. I wonder if a good golf god is simply luck by another name. Luck, good or bad, is all the golf gods are. And as was said in your thread even that doesn't exist because it's all physics. Once the club hits the ball we have 0 control over what happens next. |

I once had a run of holes where I went par, eagle, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, and bogie. Shot a 30 for that nine hole stretch. After that particular round I had to take care of my blistered hands. My putter was so hot that day, it was uncanny. Good golf God's? It was my 2 ball putter. Too bad the inserts melted out of it..............

The golf gods usually seem to know how I am playing - when I am skating along hitting it well and scoring well, it seems the wayward shot manages to hit the correct side of the tree to ricochet back into play, and the poorly struck chip seems to release and run out within gimme range. By the same token, when the swing seems sour and the scoring isn't quite happening, that seems to be when the ball kicks up the slope to find trouble, or slides from center cut out to the guardrails just as the putt seemed like it was going in. It just seems like the good breaks come when the game is on and the bad ones are rampant when it is off.
