Default Using Your Ball Retriever in the Fairway
I played golf yesterday on a very tough day (cold, wet, etc). It had rained a couple inches overnight and there was standing water in a number of the fairways. It was particularly deep near the 150 yard marker of the 2nd hole, and that is where John hit his drive. He had to get borrow a ball retriever to get to his ball.

I don't reall ever before seeing someone use a ball retriever in the fairway.

Really - was it that deep or was he just afraid of getting a little wet?

It was probably a good 30 feet across and ankle deep or worse. In windy/wet 40 degree weather I think he made the right decision.

I'm surprised the course was open.

I live in the "Sandhills" of North Carolina. And the soil is almost like beach sand and drains extremely well. But based on the standing water there apparently are limits.

I have been told (but can't verify) that they have never closed our courses because they were too wet. I do know one exception where they had to close course No. 6 because the two lakes on each side of the fairway on the 10th hole flooded and you couldn't reach the 10th green (or the later holes on the back side).

The two lakes shown here "flooded the whole fairway (re: the quoted post).

Those two lakes would be an issue for me with or without flooding the fairway.

Good job posting the photo.
