I'm sitting here watching the sbs championship on the golf channel and the announcers keep talking about the new groove rules. Has anyone noticed a difference in the pros chip shots or wedge shots not acting like the way they were last year?

As awful as it seems, I quit watching golf the day Tiger wrecked his Escalade. I just hope most other people weren't affected the same way or the tour will be in real trouble for sponsors and TV time. |

I've watched a little, mostly because I have a Yahoo fantasy team. I've not really noticed a change. I'm guessing the big problem for them will be from the rough. |

I haven't watched any but I'm interested to see if fairway percentages go up and driving distance goes down like the Pro suggested in another thread as a possibility resulting from the new groove rules...
Interested to see the effect at Augusta and the US Open, especially this year...I have a feeling that in years following the green speeds will be toned down but this year I'll bet the greens will be fast as ever and the players will score a little higher due to the new rules; would guess that it will take a little time for greenskeepers to figure out the balance... |

So you think they will adjust the green speeds to compensate for the new groove rules huh? ![]() |

I sincerely hope that they don't. The new grooves should only affect shots from rough. For shots from the fairway, you should see no difference, so why change anything? Reward the player who hits a good tee shot. That's what the groove change is all about. If it doesn't do what the RB's hope for then then it's possible that they will look at more changes. |

I watched Thursday's broadcast and I started to get sick of all the talk of the changes. Even during the pro interviews they were asking, "So how are the new grooves affecting your shots today?"
I think Faldo was trying to calm down all the talk. At one point I think he got tired of it too and said something along the lines of, "...you really won't see the effect until they play tighter fairways and firmer greens." I'm in agreement with Mr. Faldo. |

Probably have only watched maybe an hours worth, if that, for the two days. With that said, I have not seen any difference. I have notice a few very high, long shots, that drop, and stop, which I attribute the greens being lower than where the ball is being hit from. I have also noticed some really good putting, but quite a few missed putts, I thought should have been made.
Thursday the telecast came on at noon. One of the shots I saw was Stricker hitting the green from 200 yards with a 4i, but being some 70 feet away from the pin On Friday I turn on the telecast at 12:30, and low and behold there's Stricker again with a 4i going for the same green from what looked to be the same spot in the fairway. The ball even landed in pretty much the same spot that it did the day before. It was not until his first putt was an identical miss that I figured out I was watching day one footage. ![]() ![]() |

Lets not forget that manufacturers will continue to help these guys increase spin. Via the ball, adding more grooves to the wedge, etc. ![]() You won't notice a lot of difference at Kapalua because the greens are not as fast as most that they play on tour. |
