Overall, Caddyshack - as a movie - stunk. But as a collection of verbal and situational one-liners, it's priceless. As was pointed out in the bio, if it weren't for an animated gopher, there would be no means of connecting the movie together and having it make any sense at all. But as is the case with similar movies (Animal House comes to mind), it was one of those 'Could-only-have-been-done-at that-particular-moment-in-time' type of things and could never be done again.
But you really have to be in the mood for it to appreciate it. One of the lines from Caddyshack that gets me though is Spackler saying: "...He's got about 195 yards left, and he's got... looks like he's got an eight iron." That line was funny because the idea of hitting an 8-iron 195 yards was patently absurd back in 1980, but today is rather pedestrian by PGA standards. Which of course is a testament to how much longer the game really has gotten over the years (despite the many who claim it hasn't). -JP |
