Default Cold Weather Practice
I live in Iowa. We just got dumped on with 16 inches of snow and the temp is below zero. That probably means no golf until April. So besides jetting south and being glued to the Golf Channel, what's a guy supposed to do to get his golf fix?

Des Moines actually has a nice indoor bubble practice facility. You can hit full shots but only see about 100+ yds of ball flight. It's fun but a little pricey. Just wondering what others in the northern states do in the non-golf months to keep sharp.

Are there indoor ranges nearby? Maybe you could set up a net in your garage

Hang out here of course....

Indoor practice is fun and you can always see if anyplace around has simulators to play 18 on.

Ah yes but does the PS3 require the golf swing? I thought I heard that Xbox was coming out with a motion sensor control is Sony doing that also?

I have a full outdoor driving range about a mile away that is open year round. It is two stories, so during the winter months they encase each hitting stall on the lower level with 3-walls and hang a heating lamp. I use it frequently during the winter; I think the coldest day I made it out there was about 21 degrees.

Just a bubble that has limited ball flight. It's definitely better than nothing. I've been looking at setting something up in the garage. Finding a soft enough hitting surface will be the key.

Post details as they become available and I'll definitely see what I can do. Sounds fun.

You can pick up a mat at any of the Big Box sporting goods retailers, it just sucks hitting off a mat.

I just figured it's always concrete under the mats, but yeah it sucks.

I've heard that those Vijay Singh "The Golf Mat" are the best.

But still, there is nothing like seeing your ball flight.

It's too bad someone hasn't built a heated range where you are. Like, with steam pipes running underneath the turf to keep the snow melted. But that probably prohibitively expensive.

Look on the bright side. The only dome within an hour of here is only open for golf Mon-Fri 9-3. The rest of the time it is used for lacrosse and soccer. The lacrosee I get, but soccer??

If you set up something in your garage, or even some where in your house all you really need is somewhere to practice chip, and pitch shots. Perhaps a little indoor/out door carpet for some putting.

I have a relative up in Oregon where it is literally freezing 24/7 right now who does little more than string a rope across his garage, and hangs a blanket on it to hit into. Nothing but short short game shots, with an occasional full swing thrown in from time to time.

When his weather warms up enough, he's out doors hitting full, and short game shots to targets, and swears that his indoor practice session help his out of doors practices sessions immensely. When his golf season comes around, he's pretty much ready to go.

A lot of instructors will tell you a chip is just a longer version of the putting stroke, and the pitch shot is just a shorter version of the full iron swing.

As for something to hit off, again a piece of short shag carpet with a pad under it will do in a pinch. Stuff you can pick for little or no cost from a carpet, or hardware store.
