Default Where do I go from here?
Hi everybody,

I am new to the forum, and while I have been playing golf for awhile I am trying to decide where to go with my golf game. So I figured why not throw this out to the forum, because I am sure some of you have been in my same exact spot. So here is a little of my golf life and what I have in the bag.

About 5 years ago (I was 27 then) a few friends at work kept talking about how they had such a great time at the course this past weekend. One was bragging about hitting the green in 2 on a par 5, another was bragging about some long putt he sank for a birdie (or something like that as I really didn't know what they were talking about then). I had been invited to go a few times, but really didn't have much of an interest. Figured the game was for retirees and those who have too much time on their hands. After a few more ribs about playing and what not in the months that passed, I figured what the hell, I will give it a go. One of the guys I went with had some old clubs and he let borrow them for the day. Those clubs were so old, but they did job. I was hooked. I don't know what I shot that day, but it was hell. Who would have thought playing golf was so hard. All you have to do is hit a ball into a hole. But I had fun. And that was the key. After that day, I decided to buy a new set of clubs. Of course I had no idea what I was buying. But I ended up with a set of RAM clubs. Driver through SW. I bought an Ogio Bag, a friend gave me a blade putter, and off I went. I have gradually gotten better, but I have realized, I want to get better. I have never had any lessons. I just recently gotten back into golf, (after a year hiatus) and I play about 3-4 times a month and hit the driving range about the same. I am about a 30 handicap. I really want to shave some strokes. So here I am. I have been looking for some new equipment, (and hence I found THP).

I have been looking for a new driver. I know I had to start someplace, so I did my research. The 09 Burner was getting great reviews. Just so happened a friend of friend’s had just purchased a 09 Burner. He allowed me to give it a whirl. Wow I was impressed. I didn’t hesitate one at all. I bought one. 10.5 degrees, Reg Flex.

But now I am stuck. Do I get a new set of irons? Hybrids? New putter? Lessons? Even though we have 3 golf courses in town, we really don’t have a pro shop to demo clubs (hmm… never thought about it… business opportunity?). But at least I live in FL and I can travel. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jon

Lessons will do a lot more for most golfers than equipment, but equipment is more fun and can certainly help along the way. We are also in FL and I am not sure exactly where you are located, but I would look up and see what stores in atleast fairly close. Try some stuff out and see what works best and fits your budget.

Lessons. A good teacher should help you shave some strokes off your game pretty quickly. Once you get a swing with a little consistency then look at clubs. Look online for used irons. You can get some great deals on fairly new technology.

Lessons. You hear all the time that it's the indian and not the arrows, and there's some serious truth to that. I do believe that good equipment is great for your game though. They inspire confidence and today's technology certain can't hurt.

...and the pro might be able to help you with choosing the clubs. They tend to know about that kind of stuff. Nothing wrong with an old blade putter. It will knock it in the hole if you practice enough with it. Strokes will go down. I'll swear to that.

I have to say its more about proper fitting equipment then anything. You can learn to play with any kind of club but your game will suffer. When I got fit for my first set of irons I was aiming 25 yards right of my target b/c I used to have to do that to hit the ball at my target. The lie was so bad on my irons that I couldn't hit the ball straight. That alone made the biggest difference in my game I had ever seen. The best thing to do is get a lesson and get fit after the lesson. That will get the right clubs for the swing.
