I was reading Ty's review and saw that he double hit twice yesterday. To be honest, that made me feel good knowing that it happens to someone who plays golf as well as Ty does because it happens to me too - fairly frequently. Mostly in bunkers. I hate hearing that extra click because I know that for that one swing - I just got an extra stroke added to my score. Anyone else have this special talent?

I think I have done it once. It usually happens in deep rough because the club always comes out faster than the ball. Jeong Jang had a double hit in the us womens open a few years ago also one round I had like 4 |

Ah yes, thanks for reminding me. When I do it, what happens is I decelerate on the way in, then semi-duff the chip, so the ball pops vaguely up in the air. It feels so weak that subconsciously I try to give it a bit more impetus by pushing the clubhead through. I think it's because I'm trying to get the club to the end of the swing and it's not going to get there unless I make it do so. When I do that, it's normally coincident with the ball coming back down again. It's also just about the worst thing you can do on the golf course. It's as bad as a shank or hitting it OB. You add two shots and you're basically only a yard or so closer to the hole than when you started. Ugh

Sorry Diane, but there goes the neighborhood!! I used to do it a lot too, when I played a practice course with 1-2" tall grass around the greens. The greens were tiny, so it was a tall order to get on the green in one from there. I eventually developed a pitch-shot for it, that I have never found use for since.

I've never double-hit a ball (to my knowledge).
I can certainly understand how it can happen (and yes, I remember watching T.C.Chen), but as far as I know, it's never happened to me. Here's a theory: I'll bet that the people to whom this has happened tend to set up with a very square stance and alignment as opposed to those (like me) who are very open-stanced. I think that an open stance virtually eliminates the possibility of a double-hit simply because the club and the ball are going in two very different directions after impact. A more "down-the-line" player tends to chase the ball, even just for a short while, and that all by itself increases the likelyhood of a double-hit. But it's just a theory. -JP |
