My guests always tee it up first on #1 and we usually play honors. If the other person got a better score than I did I'll mention they are up and if they decline then I will tee it up. It's the way I've always played.

I personally prefer "Ready Golf".

Playing Honors is fine if everyone is ready to go and I do like the ceremonial aspect of it. But reality wins out in most cases and if someone is ready to play while the "Honors" person is either indisposed or not yet ready to go, then by all means, play away.

I mean, I'm no "speed golf" fan, but I do however like to arrive home at relatively the same age as when I left to go to the course.

I know almost nobody who is bothered by not getting honors on the tee. Most of the guys I play with play in the Men's Club and even in stroke tournaments we don't worry about honors, or who's away, or other such irrelevancies. Pace of play is the prime consideration.
That's what I see. Sometimes the group I'm in just gets in a pattern of order and we keep that through out the round. That's on the tee. Through the green and on the green the person away shoots first. "cause it makes sense.

Depending on the situation, we play ready golf on the green too. If someone is raking the bunker or hits over the green and has to walk around - one or more of us may putt out with one person tending the flagstick.

We do the same thing. Yesterday, I played with strangers and one of them sculled a bunker shot over the green. While he was walking around, we putted out. He picked up instead of playing out. I wasn't sure if that upset him or not, he never said anything and didn't seem any different. We would have waited for him to play out.

Yes.... rigid adherence to honors and who's away is a prime contributor to slow play. If you are ready to play and not holding someone else up or in his line of play, whether on the green or off, then go ahead and hit. I find nothing more frustrating than standing on the tee waiting and watching the players ahead of me while they sort out who is 2 yards further away on opposite sides of the fairway. Hit the stupid ball and get out of the way!!!!

I play with a friend who has to study every putt from both sides of the hole, so rather than strangle him, we have gotten into the routine of putting out while he wanders around the green, gets ready, and misses the putt anyway because he has information overload.

I've been on that end of the stick and it is upsetting. It's best when going for the hole to let a man in trouble shoot his way out. It doesn't take that much time to do it. Even if guys don't mean it that way, it feels like a message that...we don't have time for your bad golf. What's get's me is when the tide turns, and it always does, You end up waiting in turn when THEY get in a storm. The best thing a guy can hear when he's in trouble is...we got time. Don't worry about. Knock it in the hole. This of course is just my opinion. That and a quarter will get you 25 cents.

You could be right, but we also felt we were falling behind and that took precedence in my opinion. I wasn't sure if making him feel we didn't have time for his poor golf or me feeling rushed because we weren't keeping up was better.
