Default Driving The Cart
Most of the people I play with are better golfers than I am so I find it makes more sense for them to drive the cart when we ride. They're usually on the green before me so I hop out with my clubs and they just drive up and grab their putter. That being said, it does make me a little crazy when they have no idea what side of the ball to park on. I've tried to tell them, but everyone has their own way so I've given up on that. Do you prefer to drive or do you not care?

I like to drive if it is a course I know, the only time I don't like riding is when the driver is one of those types that pulls off before you are seated and where you are constantly grabbing on to avoid falling out of the cart. Oh yeah, I also don't like the guys who drive top speed through puddles... nothing worse than having to towel off because the driver can't slow down for 2 seconds.

I like to drive as well but have no issues with someone else driving. Unless they've had too much to drink, then it's a different story

I prefer to drive because I am left handed and everyone else is right handed. They just don't think and always drive up to the wrong side of the ball, too close for me to be comfortable. I have to wait while they move it.

One of the many reasons to walk!

I prefer to drive ... because most people are idiots.
Spoiler
You'll find that's pretty much my answer for why I do everything the way I do.

My wife drives the cart when we go out together. My wife does not golf, but likes to "get behind the wheel" so to speak. Sometimes when we decide to have few beverages of our choice (from the cart girl) she turns into her own version of NASCAR's # 43. She has even managed to tip a cart over on it's side, while taking a down hill corner too fast. But, she is still very cognizant of proper etiquette when around other golfers. I don't mind other cart drivers as long as they pay attention to what is going on around them, and stay out of my way. I was rear ended while parked, by another cart going full speed, by a driver who was not paying attention to what was in front of him. He was "looking for his ball" he said. I came out of it with a lower back issue (whiplash?), that doctors had a tough time working with. I finally fixed it on my own by accident.

We know that, Grogger--that's why we love you!

Hubby insists on driving and pretty much chases his own ball. So whether or not we have a cart, I walk the course. The only issue is if I'm carrying my clubs in my bag or in my hands.

Have to ask.... why is there a correct side of the ball to park on? The only standard I know of is to park far enough away so that the cart is not a distraction for the player making the stroke. It shouldn't matter what side it is parked on... it's an inanimate object... it's not going to squirm or scratch or sneeze during your backswing. And if I'm driving, I'll be out of the cart to help watch your ball when you hit it, of if not I'm always going to be quiet as a church-mouse anyway.

It saves time if you don't have to walk around the cart to get to your ball.

But don't you have to get your clubs from the back of the cart anyway?? It would be just as far for the driver or passenger from the back of the cart.

No - If I'm the passenger and the driver pulls up so my ball is to the right of me - I get my club, which is right behind me and I'm right there. If he pulls up so my ball is to his left - I have to walk around the cart to his side.

You're right, it would be one extra step

You must be a very tall man. It's at least 5 extra steps for me.

I think the cart should be parked so the person in the cart doesn't watch the shot from person's backside while they are hitting. By being on the other side (the "correct" side if you will) you are all but guaranteed to be far enough away not to interfere with the swing. If for any reason that you cannot park on the "correct side" of the ball, I prefer the cart to be parked in line with the ball and the target (of course, on the tee side of the ball!)

See that's the way I think it should be, if you are right handed. Your way, the driver has to make sure they are far enough away so you can swing.

I guess the best-case scenario is a righty and a lefty playing together with the righty driving!

A little over 6' tall, and I get my clubs while standing at the back of the cart like most people and from there I either go left or right. But I understand Diane, it is just a pet peeve of yours and I don't imagine many have even thought about it.

If you are riding(right side of the cart) and it is "carts on path only" and your ball is left of the cart. Does it still bother you, or do you make "him"(as stated in your post) do a U turn on the cart path

Diane would only agree with that if she was driving

Craig and Smallie - I'm glad you two have finally seen the light. I'm not a backseat cart driver.

Since these days I always ride, I've ridden with many other drivers (and driven with many riders), and I've never had anyone comment, or even notice this issue that seems to be important to you. Most players seem to feel that walking as a part of the game, so what's a few more steps.... and maybe 3 seconds of time? I guess I'll never see the significance.

If for any reason that you cannot park on the "correct side" of the ball, I prefer the cart to be parked in line with the ball and the target (of course, on the tee side of the ball!)
For most people I know that would be the least favorite place. Why is it a problem if it's out of sight behind you? It's just sitting there... no different from a tree or a bush. As long as it's 15 feet or so away, then it can't possibly be an issue unless you play with inconsiderate mates. Then it doesn't really matter where they happen to be.

But for me it's not. I don't mind people standing in line with the target behind the ball to watch my shot. I think it's the best view to follow someone's shot. It is for me anyway. I'll always stand there unless someone asks me to move. I don't recall ever being asked. (I may not be directly in line, but usually just off to the side somewhat. But quite a few steps back)

And it's not a problem if it's out of sight behind you. Never said it was. If I implied that, I didn't mean to. The problem with that is you have to make sure you are far enough away so as not to interfere with the swing or person's personal space. If you park like I park you're most likely going to be out of the way. (Unless you - - - not you personally, fourputt - - - are one who tries to park as close to the ball as possible, which doesn't bode well for parking behind someone's back.

But if someone has a personal preference, then that trumps my personal preference when they are hitting.
