"A good walk ruined." What's more contradictory than enjoying a beautiful day with the purity of nature all around you on the golf course and then seeing cigarette butts all over the landscape? Lining up a putt and having to remove someone's butt that's in your line? Seeing them in the sand traps, around the tees, on the fairways, all over the place! Geez!
Then having to endure the trails of smoke and foul air left behind, wherever the offenders go. Come on! You can say that as long as they don't impact you directly, then it's ok, but don't all those butts lying remind you that people are essentially littering the course with the very thing you're trying to escape while enjoying your favorite activity? So, what do you think of people who smoke on the golf course? Do they bother you? Are you one of them? Could smoking be banned on the golf course? Should it? Weigh in with your thoughts about another unwelcome habit being brought to the golf course. What would JD say? |

I am not a smoker, never have been and can't stand it. I hate that people smoke on the golf course but I understand it's an addiction. I also hate seeing the butts left all over the place. I wish more people would do what your wife does Smallville, or what you do CM, but unfortunately, most poeple think the ground is their trashcan when it comes to cigarettes. I also hate when people throw them on the floor right next to the big ashtrays that are left outside restaurants, malls, and stores...it's right there why do you have to throw it on the floor? People who smoke don't realize how irritating it is to non smokers. Again, I know it's an addiction and it's very hard to break, but for those that don't smoke, being around it is very uncomfortable.

Old Military training dies hard....back when I still smoked (boy, do I miss it), I would field strip mine and store the filter in my bag until the round was over. For those of you who don't understand "field strip", you knock off the burning ember at the end, step on it, roll the remaining tobacco out onto the ground, and keep the filter and small piece of paper to dispose of later.
As far as the "foul smelling" smoke left behind....please! You are in the open air, the smoke and associated smell are gone in 15 seconds. If you are that close to a smoker, just move out of range by 5 ft. Get a grip! Even as a non-smoker, I still believe smokers have rights too and there is a limit. Smoking outside should be one of those as long as you are not intentionally blowing it in someone else's face. Do you think your neighbors should never burn their fireplace because it creates smoke? Should we fine people who's houses burn down? After all, that creates smoke as well and probably worse chemicals than a cigarette. |

I wouldn't expect any less from you Craig. But I am reasonably sure that most do not do that. I see butts all over the course. And I tend to be in a lot of places on a golf course! The worst is on the tee boxes and greens, where you cannot miss seeing them. Some may say they just forget to pick it up from the tee box after hitting their shot. But don't they know golf courses use chemicals all over the place and people throw their smokes down and then put these chemicals in their mouths?

after having been a smoker for most of my life then getting lung cancer I want to preach of the dangers of smoking but don't want to be self-righteous. if people want to smoke on the course its fine with me as long as they are not near me.
But it is absolutely unnaccepteable to leave your cig butts all of the course. I find them on the greens on occasion and its disgusting. same with empty beer/water bottles laying around. I cannot comprehend how damn lazy some people are. |

I'm not big on the litter, I'm always filling my pockets and golfcart with trash I pick up on the course.
I do smoke cigars on the course. I'll water the butt when I'm done, and break it apart, scatter the remains in the rough if there isn't a trashcan handy. It'll decompose in due time, and honestly, most folks would never notice it once I'm done. (I DO NOT smoke the cigars with tips or filters, pure tobacco only) |

Of course, it's more about the litter than the smoking unless, as Diane says, you happen to be riding with a smoker. I would bet that the same people who flick butts all over the course wouldn't dream of rumpling up a McDonalds bag and tossing it hither and yon on the course. I guess they figure that since a cig butt is so small they can get away with it.
How bout this one? (And may my golf game get even worse if I'm lyin). I once pulled a butt out of a hole!!!!!! (Butt hole!!) ![]() |

I don't care about smokers as long as they keep it out of my space. Smokers should try kissing an ash tray to know how they smell. Butts on a golf course are just a sign of ignorance by those who put them there. Notice I did not say "Leave them there". Cigar left overs are the worst. Besides a lot of those who smoke are going to die a slow, agonizing death as it is, so I figure it all equals out in the end. Yes, there are few individuals who might last into their 60s-80s smoking a pack a day, but they are not the norm.

I've never smoked in my life - cigs, pipe, cigar, other substances - but grew up with parents that smoked. Hell, my fiance even smokes. If someone wants to smoke on the course, it's no big deal to me. But please put the damned things out and throw the remains in a trash can/ashtray. Keep the course clean.
