Default Walked off the course today
Actually drove off but you get the point. Played Silver Springs this morning, had an 8:40 tee time.

The course stinks, or at least the management of it by the players & the non existent rangers. I have literally never seen such poor play, poor manners & slow play in my life. Every tee shot there were at least 3 out of every group who would tee up a 2nd & sometimes a 3rd ball because they sucked so bad at hitting a ball. Course was backed up a bit but that was the fault of not having any rangers to keep the pace up & players who were playing as a friend of mine calls it "Army Golf", the shots went left, right, left , right, left, etc etc.

2 balls would be next to each other & one person would sit in the cart until the other had hit & then after the 1st guy hit his ball, put his club away & climbed back in the cart, the other guy would slowly get out of the cart, choose a club, put it back, pick another club, & then proceed to launch the ball 20 yds right.

My wife & I were playing & I was doing fairly well, used 3 w a lot off the tee & keeping the ball in play. had to play thru a 6 some...that's right a 6 some. Then came up on a 3 some who would not shut up long enough to take a shot. Claimed they were waiting on the group in front of them but I saw nobody anywhere on the hole???????

In the meantime the 6 some catches up, no no way should a 6 some ever catch a 3 some but it was happening time & time again.

Shot an extremely aggravating 41 on the front, was happy with my shots but not happy with how long it took, almost 3 hrs to play 9 holes!!!!!!!!!! Drove to the 10th tee which is a bit of cruise & came up on 2 more groupls waiting as well as 2 out on the hole already. I told my wife I was giving up & getting out of Dodge before I bludgeoned someone with a club.

It would have taken 6+ hrs to play 18 holes, totally unacceptable to myself.

Sounds like typical mid-summer golf in Wisconsin. Thats why during the summer months, I play as early in the morning as possible, before the idiots are out.

I don't typically run into that here in the Madison area, especially early mornings. Obviously the Milwaukee are seems to be a lot worse.

Six hour rounds are not the norm, but they do happen. I have played some six hour rounds. Didn't like it, complained about it, but knew it would happen again some day...and it did. Practicing flops, pitches, and chips between pre-shot routines helps to pass the time. Possibly a (cell) phone call to the pro shop asking for a refund might be in order. A good book? Of course leaving early is just as good an option as any of those I listed. Once slow play gets under your skin, and in your head, you are most likely done for the day anyway.

I would have to Dyna. I kiss the ground each day that we do not have stuff like that on most of the courses around us.

I would have been livid! I have called the clubhouse on many occasions and said basically that either they needed to send a marshal out or get ready to refund my money as I was not paying to stand around for several hours while their course got more and more backed up. I am very vocal because this is the only way to get it stopped.

Expecting these morons to police themselves is just stupid. Either the course gets marshals with some big fuzzy ones, or it loses my business and I tell them why.

For myself it was the best option as I was getting seriously pissed off & there is no reason for it. The wife & I did some shopping, got a bite to eat, saw the Transformers movie, etc.

I'm still baffled as to how a 6 some could even be allowed to play much less continuously catch up to a 3 some?

Its like that at a lot of the courses Ive played in my area (Im about 30 minutes south of Madison).
Ive personally never played in Madison, but every year I think more and more than spending the $1,000+ for a membership at one of the nicer courses/country clubs would be worth it.
On the courses around here, if you tee off after 9:00am; youd better not be in a hurry becase you can pretty much plan on spending a fair amount of time waiting on slower players who too inconsiderate to let you play throuh.
Ive gone so far as to skip a hole or 2 just so that I dont spend my entire round waiting on a group ahead of me.

Wow, its only $1000 for the nicer courses for a membership? I assume these are public courses? Around here, you spend that on a yearly pass at average public courses and a few that have specials. The private coures are WAY more than that.

Yup, Im referring to the nicer public courses. I tend to play the courses that have the cheapest green fees, so as you can imagine theres lots of white trash riff-raff that plays those courses.
No doubt at the country clubs (not sure you could really say that Wisconsin has very many true country clubs though), its much more.

Im a member of a local par 3 course and they charge $500 for a couple's membership and that allows unlimited play.
I pay $350 a year for single membership.

The true country clubs around here will run you a heck of lot more than $1,000. About the cheapest I have seen for a decent course is about $1500 but thats dirt cheap as most are $3K & up.

True, Id expect a country club to run more well over $1,000. Safe to say it will be a few years before I can afford to drop that much money on a membership at a golf course.
Luckily for me, I can minimize how much I have to deal with the riff-raff because most of them cant seem to get out of bed and out to the course before 9:00am and wont play when the temps are below 60*, so for at least half of the season I dont have to deal with them.

That's why I love late sept & oct golf, the rates are ultra cheap & the courses are empty.

Amen to that. I love early season and late season golf around here. I especially find November golf to be satisfying. I think its because I never know when the courses are going to close for the year and I play every round like its my last one for the year (because it very well may be).
