Black drink is a caffeinated tea-like beverage brewed from holly leaves and stems that was used during cleansing rituals and religious ceremonies.
Ceramic vessels have been recovered dated to approximately 1050-1250 A.D. and are associated with the prehistoric Native American civilization of Cahokia, once located near present-day St. Louis. The ceramic vessels are porous, unglazed mug-shaped. Chemical residues in prehistoric Native American ceramic vessels are believed to offer the earliest known evidence for black drink consumption. |
