![]() A Vaishnavite lamp in Dhekiakhowa Bor Namghar lamp has been kept burning for 484 years. Scholar Sri Sri Madhabdeva, the chief disciple of Assamese saint-scholar and socio-religious reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, had set up the historic Namghar (temple) in 1528 and since then the lamp has been burning continuously. The Vaishnavite monastery is in Jorhat district of India's Northeastern state of Assam. The 'Gurucharitra' written by Sattraadhikar (Chief Monk) of Kamalabari Satra in Majuli Island about 300 years ago had mentioned about the lamp being lit by Madhabdeva. The lamp has an interesting story. Guru Madhavdeva, to spread Ekasharan Nam Dharma, once came to stay in this small and very poor village. He stayed for the night at the hut of an old woman, who served him a rice with Dhekia Saak, which was considered as poor mans vegetarian food but tasty. Eventhough the old woman was very embarrassed to serve it, the saint liked it very much. He started a namghar there and gave the responsibility of kindling the earthen lamp to the old woman. Hence the temple is no called Dhekia khowa namghar. It is also called Bornamghar and every year in the sacred month of Bhado (August), the guru's birthdays are celebrated. The address is Dhekiakhowa, P.S.Lahdoigarh (Meleng),Dist. Jorhat. The sacred lamp has been formally recognised by the Asia Book of Records. |
