In this trip to Kodungallur and Thiruvanchikulam, in between I saw a beautifully renovated mosque, when enquired people there said that
"Cheraman perumal nayanar went to mecca and abdcuted his throne and built this mosque. Also they stated that this is the world's second mosque (being the first one as mecca)" So my question which is true? What happened to the great king? Whether he went to kailasam with sundarar in his white horse and sang the holy "Adhiyandha ula" or converted to islam. NOTE: Iam starting this thread not to claim against any religion or anything like that. This is out of my curiosity to know about the truth. Hope all the dear members will follow this thread with this same intention. Thanks a lot in advance. |

Durga,
According to Thiruthondar Puranam, Charaman and Sundarar came from Tiruvarur to Tiruvanchikulam and then proceeded to Kailash in `Iravatham' elephant. Only Sekkizhar's Periayapuranam (Thiruthondar Puranam) is authentic record of Sundarar's life and rest are just hearsay. Sekkizhar's Thiruthondar Puranam was composed in 11/12th century AD whereas Sundarar lived in 8/9th century AD. If Cheraman converted to Islam, Sekkizhar would not have written about him However Indian history says Islam came to Malabar region in the 7th century AD through traders. Kodungallur mosque is the first mosque built in India by Rama Varma Kulusekhara, the first convert to Islam Islam in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia But Cheraman lived in the subsequent period say 8/9th Century AD and there is no evidence that he converted to Islam So there is no connection between Kodungallur Mosque and Cheraman. All the best |

Durga, http://tourism.webindia123.com/touri...ub_cat=Mosques but what is interesting is that kannadasan wrote in vikatan a historic novel about this king (cheraman kadhali). apparently the king was overwhelmed by palace intrigue to an extent that he gave it up all, went to mecca, and died there soon after. |

There is a confusion in the whole episode.
Sundarar has lived in the 8th century AD and he has visited Tiruvanchikulam along with Cheraman. The mosque is suppose to have been constructed in 7th Century AD and it is the first mosque in India. Rama Varma Kulasekara was the last chera king who has lived in 11th/12th century. He is suppose to have converted to Islam and constructed the mosque Rama Varma Kulashekhara - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sekkizhar wrote Periapuranam in 12th Century and his work is suppose to be the history of all the 63 Saiva Saints. Sekkizhar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Only historians can declare which is correct. I wish we need not have to break our heads on this. All the best |

To All: Charaman Perumal is not born in Kings family, but as a rich high status family, sudden death of the King , as a chief minister and circumstance he become King, He took permission from Lord SIVA and ruled the Kingdom. He was blessed by Siva to speak and understand Birds Language. He is true Siva devotee and never convert to Islam. s.r.k.
