vrat is fasting on a particular day for a god or goddess. Normally, it's kept to please the deity. Rituals are followed in a disciplined manner. The well known examples are Navratre vrat, karvachaut vrat.

The Sanskrit word vrat denotes means a religious vow or promise. It signifies a set of rules and discipline. Hence Vrat means performance of a ritual, voluntarily over a particular period of time. Upwaas means fast. Normally, it's not kept religiously and it can be from health purpose.A fast, has the power to cure most ailments of the body, mind and spirit.
