Default Big Love
We had a Big Love thread at @, but it doesn't appear we have one here.

It has been put out of its misery, after its previous dreadful season. It is coming back in January for its last season.

While never a ratings juggernaut, "Big Love" enjoyed strong acclaim and earned multiple Emmy nominations during its first three seasons. But the show's fourth season was widely panned by critics and at least one of the show's stars. Here's hoping "Love" bounces back and delivers a satisfying final season. I couldn't agree with that paragraph more.

^Ditto. They should wrap it up and save what's wroth saving. S4 was extremely sub-par/boring.

It's coming back on Sunday and while I've avoided spoilers, the reviews for the season are very positive.

I loved last season (unlike everyone else), and this season is shaping up to be the best one yet, IMO. They are really going out with a bang. Loving Barb's development. And I love Nicki's daughter. Really interesting stuff! And so addictive!

I actually like this season slightly better than last season (which I absolutely hated) but not much. It doesn't even feel like Big Love to me. I feel uninterested in every storyline so far, except Alby's. I absolutely despise Lois' story so far, and I think they could be doing much more interesting things with her character.

This season is better than last, but it is making me so angry every week. There is just too much going on in an unbelievable way. I'm really having a hard time giving in to willing suspension of disbelief. They had to start the season the same NIGHT as the election and pretend for the first few episodes it was the same week? The kids got older, all the hair was different, Teeny had disappeared, Ana got bigger... just too much. Why couldn't they call it a week later, a month later? So now that Bill's had his swearing in, we can assume 2 months have passed... so in two months Lois went from fine to crippling dementia? I know it can happen in real life and maybe her screws weren't tight to begin with, but jfc, a stroke can cause the changes and it DOES happen instantly.

I think it's not the individual parts and plots that piss me of in general, but when they're all assembled, somehow they're LESS as a whole. The episodes and ideas need time to breathe and instead of breathing room, more shit is thrown at the screen. If this wasn't the last season, I would give up on watching it.

Oh and if Niki wants Cara Lynn to be adopted and safe from the compound so badly, then why not let Barb and Bill adopt her? And I love that they're being thwarted by laws that are in place probably to block same sex adoptions. Shows those fucking hypocrite Henricksons right. I can't imagine that Bill gave a rat's ass about gay marital rights until he went public about his straight plural marriage... and probably not even now.

I am so effing mad about what they're doing to Lois. She was one of the richest characters on the show, and when they didn't know what to do with her anymore, they just decided to make her senile? WTF?

I do like the Barb stuff though. I hope this season is the Emancipation of Barb.

It's just so RIDICULOUS, though. The whole thing is ridiculous. The idea that Bill could keep his polygamy private in this day in age is completely preposterous. Especially when running for elected office!

It is ridiculous...but that's sort of the appeal of the show for me. It has spun almost into an alternate history; it's kind of a parallel universe version of the real America where all kinds of issues are getting explored and played out that wouldn't in the real world. It's also a fascinating effect to have the audience root for people that on some level you have no sympathy for and nothing in common with. I want Barb to be validated as a holder of the priesthood and feel emotionally invested in that possibility...even though on some other level I obviously think she is a fundamentalist, abusive, delusional wacko. In fact there's nobody to really identify with on the show, and yet it sucks you into their issues and relies on you being able to suspend your own values and beliefs.

I do love the Barb stuff though, too. It's actually so much more interesting than if she just became an anti-polygamy, modern, non-Mormon feminist. Which is what I thought would happen...

^ I was the same at the beginning, but as more times passes I feel I'm siding with Barb more. I don't know, there's just something unspoken in Tripplehorn's acting that's making me think she's way in over her head with this whole polygamy thing, and she's been regretting it since we tuned into their lives, but she loves her husband too much for her own good and she's caving in. I feel like she went along with all of this not really realising what she was signing up for. For the past couple of seasons, I keep thinking she wants out. Especially now, with her children grown up and out of the house.

^Oh I totally 'side' with Barb, just get a lot of laughs out of the other two.

The bit in season 2 when they all just crash Barb's mothers wedding...god.

I loved the car scene with the three of them in the Finale. I got all teary eyed. I kinda wished that was the way it ended.

I absolutely agree! I am so glad that even Nikki cracked a little smile there. I wish they could have kept driving on and on....

I have to admit that the finale really had me shaken up. I will not spoil anything for other viewers, but the way everything ended has been on my mind all night. It really messed with my emotions! I just can't shake the aftershock of it all.

I cried the entire way through the finale, especially with his mother, and when he said he wished he could just dip this day in amber....and the hug at the very end!

What a great show. I am going to miss seeing them terribly!

I also thought the finale was incredibly haunting.

It really does make sense to end it that way. I was honestly a bit annoyed through most of the episode, thinking it would end on a semi-positive note, and there would just be loose ends everywhere. This ending was a very interesting way to wrap up the story, because it almost affirmed that all Bill's actions (a lot of which bothered me) were necessary to achieve the lasting effect he desired. He got exactly to the point he needed to be at so that there'd be impact into the future, and it basically became a story about a martyr, to an extent. And I thought it was clever how he allowed Barb to give the blessing. If he didn't believe in her, or that a woman could hold the priesthood, I'm certain she would not have taken over his church and his quest would've been for nothing. In the end, he liberated Juniper Creek and his wives.

I didn't like it. I'm not going to spoiler because it aired nearly 24 hours ago, so I don't know why anyone avoiding spoilers would be reading the thread now.

I agree that it would have been better to end at the car, but maybe they wanted to avoid the vagueness of the Sopranos' finale. If they wanted Sarah and what's-his-name to put in a token appearance, they could have been at Easter service. We could guess the direction the fellowship was going to go in by him asking Barb to do the blessing. That was really touching. And while I think it should have ended on the street, the only part that really got to me was Sarah.

I normally weep like a baby at things like this, but I didn't get that upset. I think not liking the last two seasons very much just exhausted me too much to care a lot. Like nearly every other episode this season, it could have been awesome, but just kinda sucked. The episode was overall much better than most of the rest of this season, but I don't think he had to be a martyr. And killed by the neighbor? Lame. He nearly gets shot by Albie last week and then does get shot by the neighbor? Just too much to suspend my disbelief. I could have understood Don shooting him more or even a random stranger. Or hell, Cara Lynn aiming for Nikki.

At least if it's over, I won't have to hate it any more.
