Default Spielberg/Will Smith collaboration for... Oldboy?
UK, November 7, 2008 - Yes, you read the above headline right, and no, it isn't April Fool's Day. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are apparently considering collaborating on a remake of Korean masterpiece Oldboy.

According to Variety, the Hollywood heavyweights have been searching for a film to make together and see Chan Wook-Park's downbeat thriller as a possible candidate.

For those unfamiliar with the material, the story concerns a businessman who is kidnapped and incarcerated for 15 years without explanation. He is then released and spends the rest of the film searching for his captor and trying to find out why. It's a brilliant film, but the denouement is so shocking that's it hard to imagine the mainstream likes of Spielberg and Smith remaining true to the source.

Whatever the case, Spielberg is currently searching for a writer to begin the development process. Source: IGN Movies

I'm sort of struggling to buy into this as having much truth in it.

And if there is any truth in it, I don't want there to be.

Agreed 100%, i read that article the other day, and i have to say...please don't let this be true. Oldboy was such an enjoyable film, i would hate to see it tainted. I will be standing next to Sirius in that boycott if this actually goes through.

This film shows a lot of promise, Will Smith mauling people with a hammer = win.

Not really, I hope Oldboy is just left alone.

I'm a little frightened at this...

at least Nicholas Cage didn't get the part, as it was rumored years ago

The thought of that is kind of amusing to me. I can't possibly see Will Smith in that role unless they change the main character to be Will Smith. I mean really, how the hell is it possible? You know it's going to be PG-13.

You cannot possibly make an Oldboy remake that is PG-13...i mean the twist at the end of the movie is probably R worthy enough itself lol. But i seriously hope this doesn't go through.

If you think they will keep the twist ending in a Hollywood remake, you're wrong.

Spoilers ahead I guess.

Will Smith will not fuck his daughter, cut out his tounge to make sure he'll never tell, and then go on living happily ever after, still fucking his daughter. It's way too Asian. And Smith is like... black.

Actually, give the part to Nicholas Cage instead, and tell him to approach it the same way he did that Wickerman remake. At least the results would be entertaining.
