Default Favorite Horror/Thriller Movies
It's that time of the season. What are your favorite horror films?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Amazing work of art. Suspense at it's best.

TCM (2003) - A fresh awakening for the series.

TCM: The Beginning - A little too gory for me. Honestly it was disgusting.

Hellraiser - This movie is terrifying and was top notch for its time. I'm working on watching the rest of the series.

House of 1000 Corpses & The Devils Rejects - I really liked these movies. Rob Zombie is an interesting director. I haven't seen his spin on Halloween yet, but hope to.

Saw (series) - I'm not sure if this is a horror movie but I'm putting it in there. 1 is still the best in my opinion, although 5 helped tie up the confusion and really delivered.

Nightmare on Elm Street (series) - What can you say? Freddy is awesome...and scary!

Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal/Red Dragon - Suspenseful and really keep you on on the edge of your seat. I love this series.

One thing I notice when looking back on the older, redefining horror films is that they scare you! Horror films today really don't give you that feeling anymore. It's a shame since over the top gore is thrown into everything now. If you look back, that wasn't the case. It's all about suspense dammit!

My kind of topic. I agree gore is no substitute for genuine suspense. I think a lot of directors might not be talented enough or work hard enough to accomplish this so they go for the cheap and easy gore effect.
anyway my favorites in no particular order.
The Evil Dead-low budget flick that had plenty of splatter but also plenty of scares.
Fright Night-Might not be uber scary, but damn IMO this was a great movie.
Night of the Demons 1 and 2
Witchboard
The above three are also pretty much low budget spookfests, but really nicely done.
Night of the living dead.(original)- classic, 'nuff said.

I'm sure there are a few more I can think of, but those are the ones that pop into my mind right away.

I have to say that although The Strangers wasn't a spectacular film, it at least was old school in the approach of building up some genuine tension and suspense, and didn't rely on cheap thrills. But i have to say that i love The Descent, All of George Ramaro's zombie films, The Devil's Rejects, and a few of the child's play films.

I like the Saw movies in spite of their flaws and in spite of the fact that I don't normally like gore for the sake of it.

I also like, off the top of my head:
Severance, Dead Calm, Jaws, the Aliens franchise, Silence of the Lambs, Romero's zombie movies, and although the scares don't work much any more I do like some older stuff such as The Devil Rides Out as well.

Dead Calm is worth a mention because it does what it does without the need for music. Sounds odd but it works like a charm.
