Default His Physical Attributes
His Physical Attributes

There is absolutely no way to conceal the fact that the Prophet is the worthiest of all mankind, the greatest of them in position and most perfect of them in good qualities and virtue. I am setting out to detail his qualities of perfection in the best way I can, which has filled me with longing to call attention to some of his attributes, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Know, may Allah illuminate my heart and yours and increase my love and your love for this noble Prophet! - that if you were to look into all those qualities of perfection which cannot be acquired and which are part of one's constitution, you will find that the Prophet has every one of them - all of the various good qualities without there being any dispute about it among the transmitters of the traditions.

The beauty of his form and the perfect proportion of his limbs are related in numerous sound and famous traditions from 'Ali, Anas ibn Malik, Abu Hurayra, Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, 'A'isha, Ibn Abi Hala, Abu Juhayfa, Jabir ibn Samura, Umm Ma'bad, Ibn 'Abbas, Mu'arrid ibn Mu'ayqib, Abu't-Tufayl, Al-'Ida' ibn Khalid, Khuraym ibn Fatik, Hakim ibn Hizam and others.

He had the most radiant colouring, deep black eyes which were wide set and had a sort of red tint to them, long eyelashes, a bright complexion, an aquiline nose, and a gap between his fronth teeth. His face was round with a wide brow and he had a thick beard which reached his chest. His chest and abdomen were of equal size. He was broad-chested with broad shoulders. He had large bones, large arms, thick palms and soles, long fingers, fair skin and fine hair from the chest to the navel. He was neither tall nor short, but between the two. In spite of that, no tall person who walked with the Prophet seemed taller than him. His hair was neither curly nor straight. When he laughed and his teeth showed, it was like a flash of lighting or they seemed as white as hailstones. When he spoke, it was like light issuing from between his teeth. He had a well-formed neck, neither broad nor fat. He had a compact body which was not fleshy.

Al-Bara' said, "I did not see anyone with a more beautiful lock of hair resting on a red robe than the Messenger of Allah."

Abu Hurayra said, "I have not seen anything more beautiful than the Messenger of Allah. It was as if the sun was shining in his face. When he laughed, it reflected on the wall."

Jabir ibn Samura was asked, ''Was his face like a sword?" He replied, "No, it was like the sun and the moon. It was round." (In al-Bukhari and Muslim and elsewhere)

In her description, Umm Ma'bad said, "From afar, he was the most beautiful of people, and close up he was the most handsome." (Al-Bayhaqi)

Ibn Abi Hala said, "His face shone like the full moon."

At the end of his description, 'Ali said, "Anyone who saw him suddenly was filled with awe of him. Those who kept his company loved him."

All who described him said they had not see anyone like him either before or since.

There are many famous hadith which describe him. We will not take the time here to give them all. We have restricted ourselves to some aspects of his description and given a summary of them which is enough to serve our purpose.

You will find, Allah willing, that we have concluded these sections with a hadith which combines all these things.

At the end of his description, 'Ali said, "Anyone who saw him suddenly was filled with awe of him. Those who kept his company loved him." I read in seerah, that they (companions) would rush the catch water, that fell when he was making wudhu.

At the time of hajj, they race each other to recieve the hair that felled from his head, when he shaved them....

Alhamdulilah.

Know, may Allah illuminate my heart and yours and increase my love and your love for this noble Prophet Ameen

Lyrics to one of Talib al-Habibs nasheed. Everyone should buy this.

Hilya - A Pen Portrait of the Prophet

Balagha al-`ula bi kamalihi
Kashafa ad-duja bi jamalihi
Hasunat jami`u khisalihi
Sallu `alayhi wa aalihi

For his face, that shone like the sun and moon
For the smile, that lightened a darkened room
For his life, that turned night to brightest noon
Send peace on him and his family.
As his hands brought fragrance to all they touched
With a perfume sweeter than rose or musk
His remembrance perfumes the dawn and dusk
Send peace on him and his family.

For his hair, that shone ebony and black
That like streams cascaded towards his neck
For the seal of prophecy upon his back
Send peace on him and his family.
For his teeth, that shone with a diamond’s gleam
For his neck, like silver and ivory
For his wisdom, priceless beyond all things
Send peace on him and his family.

For his hands that toiled yet were smooth and soft
For his feet that swelled as he worshipped God
For the marks on his back that brought tears to Umar
Send peace on him and his family.
When his blessed body was pierced by rocks
With blood streaming forth, he gave this response
‘Oh Allah, forgive them, for they know not!’
Send peace on him and his family.

For his name is Ahmad and Muhammad
He is praised in heaven and praised on earth
Though no praise can reach to his true worth
Send peace on him and his family.
All who came to him were in awe of him
All who stayed with him fell in love with him
Oh! How fortunate to have been one of them
Send peace on him and his family.

You can buy the album here.
Samples can also be heard.

Why so much importance on LOOKS?
You are admiring a person because "his face shone like the full moon" (whatever that means)?

Superman, Looks is one of the things that increases love.
The prophet Pbuh had the best of looks, and reading about his pbuh's looks only increaes our love for him pbuh.

And the thing about the moon, it differs from the briliance of the sun, because one cannot look directly at the sun with out it hurting and causing harm to the eyes, incontrast to the moon. Also it doesn't mean the prophet pbuh looked like the moon, it means the prophet pbuh had more noor and shine than the moon! Subhanallah!

Btw when in the hadiths they refer to the moon, they are talking about the full moon. Which is usually visible around the 14th/15th of every month [islamic months/lunar calendar]

Next time, look out for the full moon, and sit and ponder upon its beauty, then think our prophet pbuh had a shine better than that moon!

I recommend everyone to study the Shamail Muhammadiya. From the top of my head, all the Hadiths 'seeker of truth' mentioned are mentioned in the Shamail too.

Its an experience studying this text. Trust me

There are many narrations on the length of the hair of Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW) as has been mentioned before. There is no contradiction as the hair is the thing that grows. If at one time his hair reached the lobes of the ears, then another time it was longer. It also has been proved that Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW) shaved the hair of his head several times. A person who relates about his mubarak hair at an earlier time states he had short hair. The one that relates it at a time later than that, states he had longer hair. Some of the ulama have concluded that the mubarak hair of Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW), above the forehead used to reach till half his ears, and the hair of the middle of his mubarak head was longer than that, and the hair of
the back of the head reached till near his shoulders. Imaam Tirmidhi has related eight ahaadith in this chapter.

(23) Hadith Number 1.

Anas R.A. reported: "The hair of Rasulullah (SAW) reached till half of his ears".

(24) Hadith Number 2.

Ayesha R.A. reported: Rasulullah (SAW) and I bathed in one utensil, and the mubarak hair of Rasulullah (SAW) was longer than those that reached the ear lobes, and were less than those that reached the shoulders". (It means that they were not very long nor were they short, but of a medium length).

Commentary.
It is not clear from this hadith if both bathed in a state of undress. Ayesha R.A. herself says: 'I did not see the private parts of Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW), nor did he see my private parts'. Also the using of water from the same utensil cannot prove this. There are many ways both could have bathed from the same utensil and yet not see the private parts of one another.
From this hadith we also learn of the bathing together of husband and wife. The ulama are unanimous in accepting Imaam Nawawi's saying that this is jaa'iz (permissible). Another method is that the husband bathes first and the wife bathes after him with the remaining water. This is also unanimously accepted by all. The third method is the opposite where the wife bathes first then the husband bathes with the remaining water. This method is accepted by the Hanafis, Shaafi'ees and the Maalikis. The Hunbalis says it is not permissible, but if the husband is present and both bath together, then it is permissible. The pros and cons of this subject are very lengthy, therefore they have been omitted here. This subject have been mentioned briefly in Arabic commentary. Since a reputed Imaam opposes this, and this has also been mentioned in the hadith, it will therefore to better to abstain from it.

(25) Hadith Number 3.
Baraa bin Aazib R.A. reports: "Rasulullah (SAW) was of average hight, and the portion between the two shoulders was wide. His hair was till his ear lobes".

Commentary.
This hadith has been explained in the chapter on the mubarak features of Sayidina Rasulullah (SAW). Because of the hair is briefly mentioned here again.

(26) Hadith Number 4.

Qataadah bin Da'aamah As-Sadusi relates: "I asked Anas R.A., 'How was the hair of Rasulullah (SAW)?'. He replied: 'It was not very twisted, nor very straight. It had a slight twist and was a bit
curled, and reached till his ear-lobes'".

(27) Hadith Number 5.

Umme Haani bint Abi Taalib R.A. says: "Rasulullah (SAW) came to Makkah once after the hijrah. His mubarak hair had four plaits".

Commentary.
According to well-known sources Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW) came to Makkah Mukarramah four times after the hijrah. The first, at the time of Umratul Qadhaa in the 7th year hijri, then at the time of Fathu Makkah in the 8th year hijri and in the same journey for Umratul Ja'iraanah. Lastly in the 10th year hijri for Hajj. The journey mentioned in this hadith under discussion, according to Bayjuri is at the time of Fath (conquest) of Makkah Mukarramah. The same has been stated in the Mazaahire Haq. The Ulama have stated other times also.
For men to make plaits like women is Makruh. By the word Ghadaa'ir in this hadith, one should take to mean that, 'in which that there is no similitude', because Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW) forbade himself.

(28) Hadith Number 6.

It is reported from Anas R.A. that the hair of Sayyidina Rasulullah (SAW) reached till the middle of the ears.

(29) Hadith Number 7.

Ibne Abbas R.A. says: "Rasulullah (SAW) used to leave his hair the way it naturally was, without making a path in the hair (parting hair). The reason being that the mushrikeen
(polytheists) used to make a path in their hair, and the Ahlul Kitaab (People of the Book) did not do so. In the early periods Rasulullah (SAW) preferred to follow the Ahlul Kitaab, rather
than others, in matters where no command had came from Allah. Later this was abrogated, and Rasulullah (SAW) began apposing the ways of the Ahlul Kitaab after this".

(30) Hadith Number 8.

Umme Haani R.A. reports: "I saw Rasulullah (SAW) with four side
locks (on his hair)".

Commentary.
Apparently this is the same hadith as has been quoted earlier.

THE APPEARANCE OF THE WHITE HAIR OF SAYYIDINA RASULULLAHI
SALLALLAHU ALAYHI WASALLAM

Imaam Tirmidhi has compiled eight ahaadith in this chapter.

(36) Hadith Number 1.

Qatadah R.A. reports: "I asked Anas R.A., 'Did Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)
dye his hair?'" He replied: "The hair of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) did not reach such a stage where one would use a dye. However Rasulullah (Sallallahu alihe wasallam) did have a few white hair on his temples, on the other hand Abu Bakr R.A. dyed his hair with Hina and Katm."

Commentary
Katm is a type of grass, which is used for dying the hair. Some people say that the colour of Katm is black, and if mixed with Hina it becomes red. Others say the colour of Katm is green, and when mixed with Hina it gives a black tint. Mulla Ali Qari says: 'The one that gives more colour is considered. If more Katm is used the dye becomes black and if more Hina is used, it becomes red'. The use of both colours are permissible, but black should not be used. It has been forbidden in the ahaadith to use a totally black dye.

(37) Hadith Number 2.

Anas bin Maalik R.A. reports: "I did not count more than fourteen white hair on the head and beard of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)".

Commentary
Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) had very few white hair. There is
some disagreement on the actual number. In this narration fourteen hairs are mentioned. In others, seventeen, eighteen, and in some, twenty white hairs are mentioned. This is a minor disagreement. The other ahaadith may have been related at different periods. A difference in the counting may also be possible.

(38) Hadith Number 3.

Jaabir bin Samurah R.A. was asked a question regarding the white hair of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam). He replied: "When Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) oiled his hair, it (white hair) did not show. When he did not oil it, it showed".

Commentary
Oil gives the hair a shine, therefore the white hair becomes indistinguishable from the other hair, or they become compact and mixed, therefore the few whit hairs cannot be easily seen. When there is no oil the hair becomes dry and loose, and is easily seen.

(39) Hadith Number 4.

Ibne Umar R.A. says: "Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) had about twenty white hair".

Commentary
As mentioned above this is not contrary to the other ahaadith.

(40) Hadith Number 5.

Ibne Abbas R.A. reports: "Abu Bakr R.A. once said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you have become old'. (What is the reason? Due to this mild and soft temperament he ought to be young, and also according to his age he could be still called young). Rasulullah
(Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) replied: "The recitation of Surahs Hud, Waaqiah, Mursalat, Amma and Kuwwirah has made me old'".

Commentary
Apart form these surahs the Surahs of Al-Haaqqah, Al-Qaariah, Al- Ghaashiah etc. have also been mentioned. In short all those surahs wherein frightening matters are mentioned, e.g. Qiyaamah, (Day of judgement) Hell, the Trumpet, the punishment of evil
people etc. In hadith it is stated that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) said: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh less and cry more. You would even stop going to your wives (or as he had said)". It is written in the Sharhus Sunnah that a person saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) in his dream. He asked: "O Rasulallah, (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)! This hadith has reached me, that you said: 'Surah Hud has made me
old'". Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) replied: "There is one verse in it 'Wastaqim kama umirta' (Stay steadfast on the religion as I have commanded you). And it is well-known that to stay steadfast on the commandments of Allah is very difficult". That is why the Sufiya have written that to remain steadfast is better than a thousand miracles.

(41) Hadith Number 6.

Abu Juhayfa R.A. says: 'The people said: "O Rasulallah, (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)! we see the signs of old age beginning to show on you?" Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) replied: "Surah Hud and similar surahs have made me old".

Commentary
It is related in a hadith that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) once came out of his house, wiping his hands on his blessed beared. Abu Bakr and Umar R.A. were sitting in the Masjid at that time. When AbuBakr R.A. saw this he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. How early you have aged'. Then he began to weep. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) said: "Surahs like Surah Hud have made me old".
Zamakh'shari says: "He read in a kitaab, that a person had pure black hairone evening, and during the night it became completely white. When the people enquired of this sudden
change, he said: "At night, I saw Qiyaamah, in my dream. People were being pulled
with chains and thrown into Hell. It frightened me so much, that within the night I became like this". Allah is Great.

(42) Hadith Number 7.

Abu Rimtha Taymi R.A. says: "I went with my son to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam). (Probably he had not see Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) before). When I saw him I said to myself immediately, 'This is the true Messenger of Allah'. At that time Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) was wearing two pieces of green clothing. (His lungi -sarong,waist-wrap- and shawl were both green). On a few hairs there were signs of old age, but those hair were red".

Commentary
The signs of dignity, 'Anwaar-e- Nubuwwah'(prophetic illumination) and 'Aathari-Haybah' (signs of awe) were thus seen on the blessed face of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam).
When one sees these signs, such words naturally come to one's tongue: "There is no doubt he is Allah's Messenger and cannot be false." The ahaadith state that many Sahabah R.A. uttered such words when they first met Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam). The above Hadith also states that the hair of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) was red. The ulama disagreewhether Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) dyed his hair or not. Some are of the opinion that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) dyed his hair and they base their argument on the red hair. Others deny this and say that before the hair becomes white, it usually turns red. The redness was natural, and not that of a dye.

(43) Hadith Number 8.

Jaabir bin Samurah R.A. was asked: "Were there any white hair in the blessed head of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)? He replied: 'He only had a few on the middle parting, and when Rasuullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) oiled his hair, they did not show'".

Commentary
This narration seems to contradict the one related by Anas R.A., which has been mentioned in the beginning of this chapter. There is no complication, as there were a few white hair in the parting, that used to be covered by other hair. When oil was not rubbed in, they became visible. Therefore, if this is not mentioned in any hadith, there is no complication or harm.

(327) Hadith Number 2.
'Amr ibnul 'Aas Radiyallahu 'Anhu reports: "(Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam gave attention, spoke and showed love to the worst person of a nation. So that, the person may feel he is being given special attention). He used to give attention, and spoke to me also in a manner, that I began to feel that I was the best among the community. (Therefore one day) I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, am I better or is Abubakr better?' He replied: 'Abubakr'. I then asked: 'Am I better, or 'Umar?' He replied. "Umar'. I asked: 'Am I better or 'Uthmaan?' He replied: 'Uthmaan'.When I asked him these questions, Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam told me the truth. (He did not tell me I was better to keep me happy. Afterwards I felt ashamed of myself on this deed). I felt I should not have asked such a question".

Commentary
This Sahaabi in the beginning due to the special attention given to him by Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam felt he was the best among the community. We find from the first lengthy hadith already mentioned, that it was his noble habit to give preference to the best. But, at times, to make one's heart happy and in politeness he gave preference to that which was not the best. He even showed special love to the non-believers and the munafiqeen (hyprocrites). In the hadith, the order in which the question were asked, is because in the time of Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam the Sahaabah Radiyallahu 'Anhum regarded Abubakr Radiyallahu 'Anhu as the best amongst the people. It is also narrated in the ahaadith that in the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam we regarded Abubakr as the best, and after him 'Umar. Sayyidina Ibn 'Umar Radiyallahu 'Anhu relates that in the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu'Alayhi Wasallam we did not regard anyone equal to Abubakr, after him was 'Umar, and after him 'Uthrnaan. After that the other Sahaabah were not given preference. This means that the superiority of these three Sahaabah in this order was manifest. In the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam we the Sahaabah accepted this. Muhammad, the son of 'Ali (Radiyallahu'Anhu), once asked his father 'Ali Radiyallahu 'Anhu who was the best person after Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam?.He replied: 'Abubakr Radiyallahu 'Anhu' I asked after him who? He replied: "Umar'. There are many other ahaadith wherein during the time of Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam this order is mentioned. Therefore 'Amr Radiyallahu 'Anhu asked the question in this order. He competed with the one who was regarded as the best then the second, then the third best. If I am not better than the first then surely I might be better then the second or third.

Why so much importance on LOOKS?
You are admiring a person because "his face shone like the full moon" (whatever that means)?
Other members have answered this, alhamdulilah.

Its very important in 'love' to know how your 'beloved' looks like and the more you know about someone, the more you tend to love them. For us to love our beloved, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, we should try and learn more about him, from the way he walked to the way he looked. A natural human instinct in 'falling' in love, the more you know about someone, the more you love them, the more you yearn for them.

The remark about "his face, full moon", its an expression used by one of the companions to show, how amazed he was, as oneday he came and saw the moon shiniing so bright, and then our beloved, sallallahu alayhi wasallam came out, and him, being the best of creation, the most beautiful, the most elegant, the most good looking, he was so amazed, the companion to find how bright, 'light' that prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam had on his face. And as one sister said, i suggest this to everyone, go tonight and look at the moon. How beautiful the sight is, and how bright it is, and how calm it is, and then imagine, for a moment, how bright, full of light, YOUR prophet, your leader, your friend was..

Its an expression of love, a expression for us, the far later lovers to know the beauty of the best of creation. Hope that helps answer your question, dear brother.

Regarding the Shamail.

Yes, that link is the book, online, i suggest everyone to purchase the book, have it in your house for barakah, and also for the benefit of reading it offline.

For UK people buy from azhar

For US people, buy from Al Rashad

You can read it online at Inter-Islam.org

Please download these talks by Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar at SacredLearning.org

Its great to listen to it. Plus the shaykhs other reminders are fablous.

Plus, Shaykh Adhami also has some some talks on the Shamail, have a download of it from Sakeenah.org Its the third one down. I also suggest, download some of the other talks of the beloved shaykh, you wil be amazed at the knowledge and wisdom you shall learn.

As Shaykh Yacoubi said, there should be 4 books in everyone's home, and they were the best sellers in the muslim world before, they were Dailail al Khayrat, Qasidah Burdah, Ash-Shifa of Qadi Iyad, and Shamail Al Tirmidhi, and not your 'full sets of sahih bukhari, etc. He said, the books we have in our houses teach us more on how to 'rebel', whilst we lack so much in 'love'.

An important principle he stated was that "love is the key to obidence", lets increase our love for the most beautiful human, the most beautiful example we have.

JazakAllah for your responses and questions. May Allah lift our hearts with His love and the love of his beloved, ameen.

Yes, i was fortunate to be in that blessed gathering. I will post some of the notes later on, if time permits, inshaAllah.

But the main thing is "love", lets learn more about him, so in turn, that wil make us love him more. How can we claim to love someone, that we don't know. And if we really and truly love someone, than we wil not find it hard to follow them, and listen to all they say, without no reservation.

Request of your duas..
