depends where you will be but there is a huge Muslim community in Lusaka comprising mainly businesspeople of Asian origin. Unlike Malawi, there aren't many black Zambian Muslims and there is a need of daa'wa in that part of Africa. But Shia's are making inroads in the hinterlands.Muslims are primarily concentrated in areas along the railroad line from Lusaka to Livingstone, in Chipata, and in other parts of Eastern Province. Like I said, you are more likely to meet more Muslims in Mozambique and Zimbabwe than Zambia (in my opinion) and the few Muslims they have there are not that influential and it got worse during President Chiluba's tenure whereas in 1996 he amendment to the constitution declared Christianity to be the official religion of the country while upholding the right of all persons to enjoy freedom of conscience or religion. And last year the National Constitutional Conference adopted a clause in the draft constitution reaffirming the 1996 amendment.

I will check out with some of my contacts on the ground and will pass the numbers and details to you InshaAllah

May Allah Ta'ala make your safar easy and beneficial.

i have no idea of any contact details. but if you can inquire for Moulana Rasheed Ahmed. I think he is a khalifa of Moulana Abdul-Hamid (DB) of South Africa.

The above quote is not really correct, especially if the situation in Zambia is analysed today. The Muslims are very powerful especially economically. Whatever the constitution might state but if one has to really analyse who really pulls the strings than they will realise that Muslims play a huge role.

If that's the case then Chiluba wouldnt have declared that Zambia is a Christian country. Imagine a country like Kenya where Muslims are less than 20% but they managed to have Kadhi courts incorporated in their constitution.

Yes Zambia has less muslims than Kenya but their influence doesnt go beyond their own community which is predominantly Asians....so thats what you get if you are powerful and not engaging with the wider society

Many years ago when my grandfather went out in Jamaat to Zambia he said that the Asians/Indians control the economy.

Does anyone know which Masjid Shaykh Zulfikar Naqshbandi (HA) sits in Itikaaf in Zambia and who his mureeds are?

This is certainly not correct, Chiluba making such declarations had no effect on the muslims. Hence your claim that this proves that Muslims in Zambia are not influential is incorrect. It seems that you are not aware of the influence that the Muslims have economically in Zambia. Basically the economy would fall apart without the Muslims. There are elections happening soon and to put it in simple terms Muslims play a huge role in the president being elected.

Being influential include in the social, economic and political

Remember when Spekioza Kazibwe, Uganda's former VP announced that Ugandan men should only marry one wife? well, the UG govt got sht scared of Muslims...why? because in Uganda Muslim's wealth is spread across not just Asians as the case of Zambia

There is no point of being economically influential and nothing when it comes to influencing politics

Look at the Jews in America, they are economically influential but their clout is even felt in the corridors of power at the Capital Hill

There are some issues which occurred in Zambia recently which clearly indicate that economic power has translated into political leverage too. As mentioned previously about the huge role played in the president being elected. I feel you have known Zambia generally and do not know what really happens from the inside. The Uganda situation is different to the Zambian one, the challenges the muslims there face are different which I cannot explain on a forum.

we are here to learn and get knowledge

1. can you kindly inform us on what issues Muslims in Zambia have managed to influence in the Politics.

2. I wish to know these challenges (surely they cant be all that secret) afterall a Muslim in say Malawi would feel the pain of a Muslim in Uzbekistan even though the causes might be different

Not everything is to be mentioned in the public. To put it in simple terms let me just say I know about the influence of the Muslims and the ties they have all the way up. I feel the statement made earlier on Muslims having a massive influence on the elections indicates the kind of sway Muslims have. To go into the finer details into why this is the case would be irresponsible on my part.
