Default Refusing Iftar
As-salamu 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh

What would you say of a situation where a person was invited to Iftar but refused so he could go break his fast in the Masjid and attend prayer there? Prayer in the Masjid would not be possible because the house of the person who made the invitation is too far from the Masjid.

Unless you have other "excuses" for not wanting to go, you MUST go to eat and pray with him at his home.

I am not the one who has excuses. I was invited by a friend to Iftar and I accepted. My friend told me to invite my father and brother. My father accepted. However, my brohter said he rather stay and break his fast in the Mosque, which he and I have been doing this Ramadan, since we have not been invited to Iftar and it is more convinient to eat there. My brother said he would not come because it is fard to pray in the Masjid. So no, there are no other "excuses" involved.

What do you think of this situation?

Tell your brother, it is more important for him to go and eat than pray his faradh at the masjid!

Salam.
There are several people in my community who break their fast and pray Maghrib in jamaa in the masjid.
Very difficult to dislodge them from their viewpoint.

Does anyone have any related evidence for this, one way or another?

It's wajib to pray in the masjid if prayer time comes and you are able to reach the masjid. If you happen to be at a person's house with the intention of accepting his invitation, and his house is too far from the masjid for you to be able to pray there, then isn't the obligation lifted from you while you are there? If you use the logic that you can't accept the invitation because you won't be able to pray in the masjid, then you can never travel anywhere because you might not be able to pray in a masjid.

Can I ask a side question? What if you fully intended on going to an iftaar party, but last minute something happens and you can't go? Like your lift comes 20 mins early and you are not ready, so the rest have to leave? Is accepting an iftaari mustahab or sunnah muakkadah ?
