Default Opportunity to Partake in a Forgotten Sunnah and Gain Sadaqa Jariya
Salaam alaikum,

I am a rural land owner and I have been working towards building a self-sustaining farm here with an intention to begin a small Islamic farming community. I have intentions to start a building a small masjid here and a zawiya.

I plan to plant fruit trees to make a small fruit orchard here, and thought I would give people the opportunity to take part in this through donation. In many ahadith the virtue of planting fruit bearing trees have been mentioned; Rasulullah salallah alaihi wa alihi wa salim said,

"If any Muslim plants a tree, he receives the reward of giving charity if any insect, bird, or wild animal eats from that tree." - Bukhari

"When a Muslim plants any tree, he receives reward if anybody eats from it, steals from it, and if an animal consumes from it as well." - Umdatul Qari

Abu Darda said that the reward of sadaqah is recorded for a person who plants any tree or vegetation, when any creation of Allah benefits from it." - Majma'

Some ulama have said that taking benefit also includes taking rest under its shade, etc. So as I know many people can not practice this and gain such a level of sadaqa due to having no place to plant a tree, if any brother or sister wanted to donate money, either buy a whole tree or a share in a tree, I would purchase the tree, transport, plant and care for the tree. I can also take pictures of the trees and send them to however would want them. The cost for a whole pear tree would be around $25 Canadian dollars, cherry tree is around $20 canadian dollars, apple trees are a bit more expensive around $50 canadian dollars. I can get the exact price of these trees, but compared to the virtue gained by this act the cost is very small. If anyone is interested please respond to this thread. Jazakumullah khair.

I'm interested, but can I ask you one thing? If I buy a tree, and when it bears fruits, is it possible for you to give those fruits as gifts to people in the path of Allah SWT / Ulema e Huqq when they visit your city??

Salaam alaikum,

Yes definately. Tabligh Jamaat comes in this area as well too and fruit can be given them. What I plan to do is to set aside my own trees and the donated trees (I'll just tie a colored ribbon around the donated trees). My own trees would be for my and my families consumption, sale, etc. The donated trees would be free for all Muslims, with a priority to travellers, poor, students of knowledge, guests who come here (like tabligh jama'at, etc). So yes this is my intentions. I hope that my efforts here will benefit the whole ummah insha'Allah.

I people interested, please let me know and we can corresspond through email.

Insha'Allah brother, I will let others know about this. I think more Muslims should take similar initiatives, especially in Canada. Insha'Allah, I too hope to do something similar (dua'as please).

I'll share something I found amusing: I was talking with a teacher in the English Language Program at our university and she mentioned a certain field trip they take international students on. They visit a hutterite colony where the students are usually quite taken aback by the stark contrast between these people and those living in the city. Anyway, one day a Saudi student asked if he would be able to live in one of the colonies if he was to move to Canada as he was not happy with city living here (especially in universities, it can be tough). Insha'Allah, in such a vast country where so many farming families are abandoning their farms for a 'better' life in cities, we can establish a few farms of our own.

Al hamdulillah, it is always nice when the jamaat comes, usually youngsters. They get to camp out here, since the local masjid doesn't let them stay. I take them fishing etc, it pretty good. One time we prayed fajr outside in jamaat, and there were ALOT of mosquitoes biting in salah, so when the prayer was finished the younger bros all started slapping and jumping. I told them by way of muthakira, "Congratulations to you, may Allah reward you. You got a taste of the khairul quroon. Sahabah would pray and have arrows shot into them and it would not break their concentration, al hamdulillah all we need to deal with is a few mosquitoes."

When do you plan on planting the trees? Will you plant them as you receive donations or will you plant them enmasse at a particular time. I understand the best time to plant trees is when they are dormant but during a frost-free period - so, late fall or late winter/early spring.

Maybe the timeline will be helpful for those wishing to donate.
