Islam encourages us to gain knowledge especially religious knowledge, however it is also dangerous in the sense that it can make a person blind? I have read that sometimes too much attention to narration and narrators etc. etc. can blind the heart and make it too preoccupied with other than Allah

Imām Mālik [رحمه الله] said:
“Knowledge does not consist in narrating much. Knowledge is but a light which Allāh places in the heart.” [Ṣifat as-Ṣafwah & Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr (3:555)] Abū Dardāʾ [رضي الله عنه] said: "Indeed my greatest fear concerning standing on the Day of Judgment is that it will be said to me: You have learned, hence what have you done with your knowledge?!" [Jāmiʿ Bayān al-ʿilm wa Fadlihī #647] Imām al-Awzāʿī [رحمه الله] said: "I have been informed that it used to be said: 'Woe to those who acquire religious knowledge for other than the sake of worship, and to those who permit the unlawful due to doubtful arguments.'" [Iqtida' of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi] Imam ash-Shafi'i said: “I complained to my teacher, Waki` [رحمه الله] about my bad memory, and he taught me that I should keep away from sin. He said that knowledge of Allah is light, and the light of Allah is not given to the sinner.” May Allah make us from amongst those that act upon our knowledge in sincerity, amin. |

We are all ignorant to some degree...we do not know everything to perfection, so as long as we try to gain knowledge knowing this we are secure. I work in an environment where it seems people want to prove how clever they are to others...and this is useless... But I now live in the one where people think it is good to be crafty. |

"Need (faqr) is a light as long as you conceal it. When you make it public its light departs."
"Every needy person to whom taking is more beloved than giving is lying; he has not smelt the scent of need." "Whoever is occupied with the world will be tried with humiliation in it." "The heart has only one direction which whenever it faces it it is absent from other than it." "There is no way to Allah except by the door of following the Messenger." The foundations of our path are five: • Taqwa – mindfulness of Allah, privately and publicly • Adherence to the Sunna in word and deed • Indifference to whether others accept or reject one • Contentment with Allah in times of both hardship and ease • Turning to Allah in prosperity and adversity. The foundations of the preceding five are in the following five: • Exalted aspirations • Maintaining Allah’s reverence • Expending oneself in excellent service of others • Fulfilling one’s resolves • Magnifying one’s blessings. The foundations of right conduct are five: • Seeking sacred knowledge in order to fulfill Allah’s commands • Keeping company with spiritual guides and the fraternity of aspirants to gain insight into one’s faults • Foregoing dispensations and interpretations concerning injunctions for one’s own protection • Organizing one’s time with the remembrance of Allah to maintain presence of heart • Suspecting the selfish soul (nafs) in everything in order to free oneself from its whimsical desires and to be safe from destructive circumstances. The foundations of what will cure the sickness of the soul are five: • Moderation achieved by lightening the stomach’s intake of food and drink • Taking refuge in Allah from harm when it actually occurs • Vigilantly avoiding places where one fears misdeeds will occur • Continually asking forgiveness of Allah coupled with devotional prayers upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, in both solitude and gatherings of people • Keeping company with one who guides to Allah. Unfortunately, such a one no longer exists! |

One thing is sure,The knowledge necessary for our day to day living is not much, all the rest might be good for intellectual exercise, discussions, creating an impression etc...which is obviously not only useless but dangerous. We Quote one Shaikh after another, ignoring the fact that the 'Hikma' which springs from their chest to their tongues,is the result of their Taqwa....and the time they spend in solitude with their RABB.Instead of quoting them, why not try to become like them,so that the same Hikma fills our chest too?
Again we must differentiate between the "True Ilm" and "The empty words" we keep on repeating like parrots.Sahaba, despite all their greatness, which no one can dare dispute, had much less bookish knowledge than the ones who came after them. The "Mutakhireen" had access to all the Sihahe Sitta,a combined Knowledge of of almost all the Sahaba, but the "true Ilm" was possessed by Sahaba....The Ilm which enlightens the Qalb and prepares one for Akhera. I am not implying that the "Mutakhireen" were devoid of true Ilm,but the difference between them and the Sahaba is obvious.. Similarly, with the flood of books on Tassawuf in the market, even ordinary people like us has more knowledge on Tassawuf than even some of the Akabir Sufia....but we don,t have even an iota of the true HAAL,which they possessed.I heard one Shaikh saying " Tassawuf dar kitab wa Mashikh dar Quboor" ( Tassawuf is now limited to the books....and true Mashaikh are resting in their Quboor).......and that is why a Munkir had the courage to sarcastically comment: " Tassawuf barae Sher guftan khoob ast" (Tassawuf is good for writing poetry). |
