Canadian anchor appears on screen in full veil to mock niqab-only TV

Monday, 30 July 2012
By Al Arabiya

A Canadian TV anchor appeared in a full face-veil (known in Arabic as the niqab) to present his show on Canadian Sun News TV, ostensibly in a bid to poke fun at the newly-launched Egyptian channel, Maria TV, which features women clad only in the niqab, the Maan News Agency reported on Sunday.

Maria TV, which was launched on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan earlier in July, employs only women in niqab, even for behind-the-camera jobs.

Canadian anchor Michael Coren, dressed in black from head to toe, hosted a Muslim cleric from Toronto at the studio and discussed with him the idea of creating such a channel in Egypt.

Coren asked the cleric why Muslim women dressed “in that weird way?”

The Canadian anchor also asked the imam why Muslim men do not get dressed in black like women. The imam replied saying it is the same reason that persuades Christian nuns to wear their veil in church.

Earlier this month, Coren appeared on his show to talk about a nine-year-old Canadian girl who refused to remove her hijab during a soccer tournament. During his show he said girls in such situations had two choices: remove the hijab or not play soccer.

“It has already been established so many times that the burka, hijab are not religious requirements,” he said on his show, a video clip of which was posted on July 12. “The Quran only demands modesty. Even if it is a religious requirement, so what? We respect your right to wear it but it does not mean we have an obligation to allow you to wear it in a soccer league,” he said.

I have to say that these efforts to get women to wear their hijab in sporting events is a joke in many different ways. Even for the men, many of the sports they are competing in have nothing to do with modesty. We could conceivably have a non-televised muslim-only series of Games or sporting events on a very low-level, but I do not know why there are so many Muslim men and women out there who are itching to compete internationally, as it really makes laughing stocks out of us.

There is absolutely no need for a woman to be wearing body fitting clothing and jumping around for live and/or televised audiences, then protesting about wearing "hijab", even though the so-called hijab in this case has nothing to do with the Shariah, as any normal man will tell you that his manly feelings are aroused when he watches such women, even with their scarves on.

Even the non-Muslims understand the silliness of this issue, in spite of how Shaytan has totally blinded them concerning thousands of other matters. I do not know what the proper 'Ulama would say about the permissibility of women's sports as a whole, but an audience watching women playing sports, even when more or less covered, is a recipe for problems.

If soccer seems to be more important than Deen to her, then she should follow Kuffar's rules. If not, then she must stay inside veil. Islam and Kufr can't be mixed together.

why cant she play soccer in hijab. we should not let the kufar make the choice for her. why dont they say that you cant play soccer with a rosery around your neck or earing in your ears. these are objects of distraction & can also cause harm, but no thats fine.

The status of women in Islam is of great honour and respect. Women are the future of the Ummah in the sense, they bring up the next generation. Almost all of our esteemed classical scholars had one thing in common and that is a very pious mother. The restrictions on the women to freely roam, or show themselves is only because of their own being. They themselves are so precious that no father wants his daughter leave the house alone or uncovered, no husband wants his wife to leave house alone or uncovered, no brother wants his sister to leave the house alone or uncovered, no son wants his mother to leave the house alone or uncovered.

Muslimahs need to realize their importance and the amount of respect they carry along with them. If one truly realizes the virtue of herself being a Muslimah, the status of being a Muslimah, the respect of being a Muslimah, and the great honour of being a Muslimah I can very much certainly say that none would ever bother about even leaving the four-walls of her home without a very strong reason, let alone going into a stadium and playing football as an entertainment for millions of men around the world.

And Allah knows best

Coren's father was Jewish as was his maternal grandfather, while his maternal grandmother came from a family of Welsh coalminers and converted to Judaism. He converted to Roman Catholicism in his early twenties while still living in England, but that didn't last long. In early 2004, he embraced Catholicism again. what do you expect from a Christian Zionist

Women wearing hijab are running, jumping and dribbling in the field with a ball and thousands of people are watching- do you think it is a good scenery?

Blame the Muslim men for not facilitating shariah bounded facilities for sports and health for muslim women, that they have to instead get attracted to such places and be a subject mockery and attack against islam. I feel pity on those Saudi men holier than thou products, quick to label the Saudi women as "shameless" when they are themselves in bigger shame that they have caused such a situation to arise even though they say they were the "guardians and protectors" of the women. If half the money spend on their expensive cars were diverted for such facilities, it would make a big difference.

Good! I like it! At least there is exposure! Good or bad at least people will know about Islam so tomorrow on the day of judgement they must not complain about being thrown into the fire!!

you said the saudi men's lack of spending for shariah compliant sports facilities was a cause of 'such' incidents. i assumed you meant the canadian girl who was asked to remove hijab during soccer.
your argument was that lack of facilities force the women to seek non-shariah alternatives for their health and fitness.

how does the argument extend to olympics? surely the women aren't competing for their 'health and fitness'? how did lack of spending by saudis on 'facilities' land the women in the olympics?

kindly explain.
and also show that there are inadequate shariah compliant facilities for women in saudi arabia.
