As-salamu alaykum.
I have two related questions about the order of the Qur'an that I hope the members here can help me find answers to. 1) Why was the Qur'an not arranged in chronological order? 2) I believe that the Qur'an was standardized under Caliph Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). What was the process by which the Qu'ran's order was standardized? JazakAllah Khayran for all of your help. |

As-salamu alaykum. -The order was standardized by the Rasoolullah ![]() -Uthman (ra) only standardized the 'Arabic script' that was written down in the mushaf. The earlier Mushaf did not have 'harakat' (diacritics) because everyone knew how to pronounce it without them in those days. I m posting below the truth: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

As-salamu alaykum. ![]() Please review any book of on the sciences of the Quran (Uloom Al Quran) and Inshallah you will readily find all the answers to such questions as relating to the sciences of the Quran. You can download Abu Ammars (Yasir Qadhis) "Introduction to the sciences of the Quran" here http://kalamullah.com/al-quran.html and another really helpful text is Mufti Taqi Usmanis 'Uloomul Quran' which has been translated into english and is a must read. Yasir Qadhi also has a youtube video series which covers his book http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voMjhfEBRO4. In this lecture he begins dealing with the collection and preservation of the Quran http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuB8N...feature=relmfu If you can read arabic, you can have a look at Imam Suyutis 'Itqan fi Ulum Al Quran' or Imam Al Zarkashi's 'Al Burhan fi Ulum Al Quran'. Although, I would recommend starting with the above mentioned texts. |

Although this has already been answered, I recommend the book The History of the Qur'anic Text from Revelation to Compilation by Muhammad Mustafa al-Azami. It's a book dedicated to explaining the Qur'an's compilation, as well as a comparative study between Old and New Testament's reliability/authenticity.

Thank you very much to everyone who has replied to my original post so far. May Allah forgive me for not being careful with my words in my original post and for the implications they carry.
I was aware that the angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) would review the Qur'an with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) every Ramadan and that its order was preserved in the memories of the Muslims. I had thought, however, that when Caliph Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) collected the Qur'anic Mushafs in order to standardize the harakat/diacritics, there existed some Mushafs which differed in the order of Surahs from that compiled by Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) under Caliph Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). After reading through the discussion about this from Ma'ariful Qur'an, it appears that this is not the case. Naudhubillah, I was not suggesting that the order of the Qur'an was not perfectly passed down from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as it was revealed to him. This reminder that the angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) reviewed the Qur'an with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) every Ramadan answers my first question about why the Qur'an is not arranged in chronological order as well. Again, thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread and for the reading material provided to me. May Allah forgive me for not being careful with my words in my original post and for the implications they carry and prevent me from making such mistakes again in the future. |
