It is reported that Al-Aswad [b. Yazîd Al-Nakha’î] used to complete the recitation of the Quran in Ramadan every two nights; sleeping between al-maghrib and al-‘ishâ. Outside of Ramadân, he used to complete a recitation every six nights.
Abû Nu’aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 1:250.

It is related from Al-Rabî’ b. Sulaymân, “Muhammad b. Idrîs Al-Shâfi’î used to complete reciting the Quran in the month of Ramadan sixty times, all in the prayer.”

It is reported that Abul-Ash-hab said, “Abû Al-Rajâ` [Al-Atârudî] would complete with us a recitation of the Quran in the night prayers of Ramadan every ten days.”

As for virtuous times, like Ramadan – especially the nights in which it is hoped Laylatu Al-Qadr will occur – or virtuous places, like Makkah – for those who enter it and are not residents there, then it is recommended to increase in reciting the Quran, making the most of the time and the place. This is the position of [Imam] Ahmad, Ishâq [ibn Râhûyah] and other Imams, and the practice of others [from the Salaf] indicates [they held the same position].

In the hadeeth quoted below, it is being said that one should take at least three days to complete the recitation of the Quran but I have heard and read that many pious elders including Uthman (RA) used to recite the Quran completely in one day and some used to complete every night like this. Also even in these days some people are able to do so particularly in the month of Ramadhan but I see that people raising objection to it quoting this hadeeth. It would be really helpful if you can kindly clarify.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: Yazid ibn Abdullah said that Abdullah ibn Amr asked the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him): In how many days should I complete the recitation of the whole Qur'an, Apostle of Allah? He replied: In one month. He said: I am more energetic to complete it in a period less than this. He kept on repeating these words and lessening the period until he said: Complete its recitation in seven days. He again said: I am more energetic to complete it in a period less than this. The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: He who finishes the recitation of the Qur'an in less than three days does not understand it. Sunan Abu Dawud

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.



The ability to recite the Quran differs from person to person. For some, proper recitation of Quran is done with great effort. Others on the other hand find the Quran light on their tongues. The advice in the above referred Hadith is for such people who will not be able to fulfill the right of reciting the Quran with Tajwīd in such a short time.



However those who find the Quran light on their tongues may not feel the same. As reciting the Quran in less than three days can be done with ease. It is a well established fact that recitation in a shorter time than three days was the practice of many pious predecessors [1] Some would recite the Quran in one day, others twice a day, even today those who have dedicated themselves to the Quran may recite the Quran more than once in a single day.[2]



Based on the above, the majority of Ulama feel that there is no real limit to how much one can recite in a day. Rather it is a matter of preference differing from individual to individual.[3] If one feels whilst fulfilling the laws of reciting the Quran with Tajwīd, the Quran could also be completed in less than three days then it will be permissible to complete the Quran in such a time. If this is not the case then one should recite the Quran to the best of one’s ability in whatever time he feels is appropriate.

Finishing 60 Qur'an's would be easier for them.

The rest of us on the other hand have to finish reading Qur'an while also reviewing what we've memorized, which makes it harder, at least for me.

Finishing 3 qurans in ramadhan is not much because you can easily read 3 qurans in other months too.

One can easily read 3 paras/juz in 1 hour. 1 hour daily and you can finish a quran in 10 days. So only 1 hour to quran in ramadhan?

I too cant finish 3 ajzaa in an hour but I heard some people finish 1 juzz in 10-15 mins. This is impossible for me. Perhaps some can recite at express speed. Some are blessed. However if ALlah SWT gives me tawfeeq to recite 10 ajza per day in ramadhan, that would be really great.

I don't know much about the Deobandi school's history, so I did some reading for Ramadan and found a few nice breakdowns of Shaykh al-Hadith Zakariyya Kandhlawi's daily Ramadan routine.

Here is his schedule for Ramadan of 1965. 'Parts' refers to Juz of Qur'an recited.




And here is how he would complete recitation of little over 1 khatm of Qur'an daily in Ramadan.



Pretty impressive to say the least.

Tajweed and Tabyeen are wajib not tarteel like qari abdul basit.

A person can easily read a juz in 15-20 mins with tajweed/tabyeen even if he is not a hafiz.

in the end its all about ikhlaas, talluk with Allah. A person who finishes 60 qurans in ramadhan might end up getting less ajr than a person who completes one quran with difficulty in ramadhan depending on his ikhlaas and talluk with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

At tarteel tajweed dul Huruf wa ma' rifatul wuquf...

I personally cannot finish one juz with the above tarteel in 30-40 min. Believe me I am born into pakistani environment where we read the first harf and the last .. with "min min" in the middle. So it has taken a lot of time to erase my teachings and resorting to slower, audible, and proper reading.

I have although seen huffaz do it conveniently.

in the end its all about ikhlaas, talluk with Allah. A person who finishes 60 qurans in ramadhan might end up getting less ajr than a person who completes one quran with difficulty in ramadhan depending on his ikhlaas and talluk with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Yes, inshAllah.

Be that as it may, Let us set a score for the whole of SF (who so ever wish to report their khatams), to hit the 60 khatams mark (or even a bit higher) and we send all the thawaab to Nabi and all our brothers and sisters of ummah in takaleef around the world.

Tajweed. It's compulsory to recite Qur'aan with tajweed. This is one of the first things we learn in tajweed kitaab, that whoever recites Qur'aan without tajweed (when he can) is a sinner.

It is indeed possible to complete quran 60 times. And there are some buzurg who are still alive who can reach this mark.

There was a buzurg who recited quran during tawaaf, during one tawaaf would complete the whole quran.

This is a blessing of time. People still think how did Moulana Yunus Patel (ra) managed so many letters e.t.c or even today, it is true (sometimes) wherever Haji Abdul Wahab (db) visit for bayan or for tableeghi purpose, he would be there already, whilst others would come the next day, now how can we think of a person who is on a wheelchair could do this. Its just a blessing of time. Allah (swt) gives this to whoever he wants.

Lets make dua that Allah (swt) allow us to finish 60 khatam of the quran, and grant this blessing of time. Ameen.

speed does not negate tajweed. when i was first learning tajweed i used to think how do people read so fast with tajweed. But after 1 year of practice i cud read fast with tajweed.

In tajweed there are some rules which they say is wajib but they are only wajib in the sense of tajweed not shar'an. for example those small letters found in urdu qurans, they always say its wajib to stop on them. These letters are not there in the arabic quran. So its not wajib shar'an.

Similarly we see that in tajweed they tell you to lengthen the mad to five alifs. But thats not necessary, you can also do it 3 alifs but the thing is tht u keep it constant thru out the quran.

Yes, I think its a matter of having barakah in time and this is what makes the completion of Qurans possible without the need to forsake tajweed and tarteel.
