Is refusing a proposal because of ethnic, linguastic or cultural differences acceptable as per shariah?
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi was sallam) said, "When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks to marry your daughter, comply with his request. If you do not do so, there will be corruption and great evil on earth. " (Tirmidhi) So if the family/wali of a sister refuses her proposal on this basis saying that the family believes that the two families of different cultural backgrounds would not be able to gel together or that they will not feel comfortable in such a relationship and fear discomfort/uneasiness between the two families. So will this reason be acceptable as per shariah or even then will it be considered as going against the Hadith? |

In the Shafi'i madhhab, considerations of lineage are valid reason to refuse a marriage proposal (i.e. Hasanis and Husaynis preserving the Ahlul bayt lineage).
Here is a good, brief advice on choosing a spouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9naaQ-p--g Language and culture is important consideration because it can lead to misunderstanding and divorce. Allahu Alaam. |
