Default The Essence of Deen e Islam is sacrifice of self desires?
The essence of the deen is for man to give up his individual will and desires, to completely submit to the Will of the Creator and His Commands in the Shariah. But man is hasty, anxious, heedless and his animal self can easily overpower him, and there are shaitani jinn and humans that can whisper to him and take him to the wrong path.

To motivate man to obey Allah and to fulfill his purpose as a worshipping slave of Allah we are taught that obedience has its own fruits and rewards that nothing else can satisfy except Allah . In short disobedience to Allah might give a temporary appearance of satisfaction but it will be short-lived and will cause pain in the near future causing more disobedience unless Allah gives His Mercy Forgiveness and Guidance to the unfortunate man. Obedience will give peace and satisfaction even if wealth, health etc. are missing. So man must gather courage with himself and strive to let go of self-willed desires...all pain will become contentment in the end...even if no contentment and peace are felt one must strive to make Allah ones only Beloved. No matter what pain and poverty one goes through I will still obey my Allah should be the default attitude of the momin and is perfectly displayed in Sura Yusuf, by Yusuf Alayhis Salam. It is is easy to compromise, take short cuts and to fail and fall, when all seems restricted, one has lost all ones possessions, family and friends whispers might be heard that 'you are a loser', 'you are deluded', look what your condition is now...but himma and courage will help silence these.

Would it not be great if our cultures helped to foster such attitudes instead of hindred us? We should be working together to establish the deen fully.
