Asalaamu alaikum,
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for organizations that are worthy of zakat contributions? I have heard of and contributed to Islamic Relief and Zakat Foundation, but I'm not sure if these groups make the best use of zakat donations. I'm trying to give zakat during Ramadan insha'Allah, and would appreciate any help as soon as possible. JazakAllah khair. |

ive had some bad experience with muslimhands......they r run by some brelvi brothers.....i was representing another charity(i was forced to do this though i aint got much of a clue about charity work) and the maulana representing muslimhands was automatically against us, making things difficult just coz he knew we were deobandis....then he was acting as if we were collecting money for some other purposes....
personally i think there needs to be a major shake up of how charity money is used or shall is say abused...... |

Thank you for the opinions everyone. I currently sponsor an orphan through Muslim Hands, so I hope the money is going where it is intended insha'Allah. Which brings me to my next question: can my monthly contribution to this type of fund be considered part of my zakat? I have an automatic deduction at the beginning of each month set up, and the money is sent overseas specifically to an orphaned child in Sudan.

![]() Islamic Relief is definitely the best; they're one of the highest rated aid organizations in the country, devoting, I believe, almost 97% of your donation towards relief (and not adminstrative expenses). It's also the safest organization to donate to if you're wanting to help Palestinians, because they're one of the few organizations that don't go through Hamas. |

UNFORTUNATLEY THE UMMAH’S ZAKĂT IS BEING DISTRIBUTED MORE TO MADRASSAHS AND LESS TO THE POOR. the madaris are in control of who they give the zakaat to, and as the zakaat needs to go to a person rather then an organisation, the madaris will force the person to give some of the zakaat back to the madaris and if he does not then some other person is chosen to receive the zakaat. is this true? |

if the madrasah is collecting the zakah & deviding it & distributing it then the madrasah is entitled to part of the zakaat. but not as a madrasah but as the collector.
why do the collectors take 10% of what they collect-should they not only take once the money has been devided between the various recepients-then being one of them. |

how can one take 10% when the zakat is given for the poor. that is unfair . 1. Faqīr (destitute) – someone who does not have wealth or earning that is sufficient for himself. 2. Miskīn (poor) – someone who has something to spend for his needs but it is not sufficient. 3. ʿĀmil – Zakāh collector. 4. Muallafat al-qulūb – those whose hearts are to be reconciled. 5. Riqāb – those slaves who are purchasing their freedom. 6. Those in debt 7. Sabīlullah (those fighting for Allah) – people enganged in Islāmic military operations for whom no salary has been allotted in the army roster. 8. Ibn al-sabīl – the traveller in need of money. these are the 8 groupes entitled to zakah. do ahnaaf need to devide it by all 8, or can you give the money on your own to whoever you feel to. |

Is it lawful or not for Islamic seminary to accept Zakaat or for one to give to? A. Zakaat can be given to the Islamic seminary which is managed and operated by Ahle Sunnat (with correct beliefs) not by renegades like "Necharies" (materialists, aetheists), "Qaadianies" (those who do not believe in the finality of the Prophethood of Saiey-yidinaa Muhammad, Allah's choicest blessings & peace be upon him), "Raafsies" (Shiite sect) etc: with the condition that the management of the seminary will keep it separate from other funds and spend it fulfilling the prerequisite of "Tamleek-e-Faqeer". This money can not be used for paying salaries of the teachers and other employees of the seminary or spent on construction or repair of the seminary unless a beggar, poor is made owner of the Zakaat money who may donate the said money to the seminary for the purpose. kindly read this http://www.albalagh.net/qa/zakat_questionz.shtml Zakat For Islamic Schools and Orphanages Q.) I used to give zakat to Orphanage and madarasas. Somebody told me that the zakat money cannot be used to construct the orphanage or madarasa building structure, and can only be used for its operating costs, so you should not give zakat to these organizations if the zakat is being used for constructing the orphanage or madarasas buildings. Please explain this. Also, how would one know for what purpose your zakat money was used by these organizations and whether you zakat was properly disbursed. [Sabir] A.) Zakat must be given to the poor and needy. Zakat cannot be used directly for constructing a madrassa or an orphanage. You should give out your zakat personally to the poor and needy who are eligible to accept zakat. If you choose to give your zakat to an organization make sure that there are competent Ulama there who are well versed in the laws of Zakat. You should not give your zakat to an organization where there are no reliable Ulama and the organization is not well versed in the laws of zakat. If they did not discharge your zakat according to Shariah, your zakat obligation will not be fulfilled. And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Giving Zakat to Relief Organizations Q.) In the USA there are relief organizations which collect zakat funds. They usually keep behind 10-12% of the zakat collected as an operating expense. Is it valid to give zakat to such organizations and fulfill your zakat obligations? [Sabir] A.) In principle, the prerequiste for discharging zakaat is tamleek (making the needy owners of the zakaat). (Hidaayah) If a person hands over his zakat to the organization and the zakat gets used in the operating costs without making a needy person the owner his /her zakat will not be considered as discharged. Therefore people should be extremely cautious as to whom they hand over their zakat. And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best |

i was told this in pakistan but dont know how true it is.... The madaris in Pakistan are essentially relief camps in themselves. They provide free food, bedding, supplies, etc. to poor students from across the country. The majority (depending on the madrasa) of the students enrolled in these madrasas are eligible for zakat. So the money is either directly given to them in cash or they are helped in other ways. The zakat money collected by the madaris is not used for any worldly purposes so to say that the money is going to the madaris and not the poor is illogical and wrong. |
