Default My Sunnah Prayers
Asalamualaikum
I was reading through some posts, articles, etc. and for some reason I think I might be doing my sunnahs wrong. Please help me correct if im making any mistakes if any please:

Fajr-
2 sunnah then 2 fard
Dhur-
4 sunnah then 4 fard then 2 sunnah
Asr-
none? this is where im getting confused i see people saying 4 sunnah before.
Maghrib-
3 fard then 2 sunnah
Isha-
4 sunnah then 2 fard then 2 sunnah then witr

Another thing is a pray the 4 sunnah with tasleem between the two, am I wrong there? This list is not including the 2 sunnah for entering masjid. I also seen Nawafil prayers i always thought that was just sunnah. Can someone enlighten me in a format like this b/c funny enough I couldn't find one like this with each sunnah i should pray when researching.

Asalaamu Alaikum, there are four types of prayers. One is the Fard prayers which are the obligatory prayers. Second are the Waajib prayers which are the compulsory prayers. These are almost as important as the obligatory prayers so still have to be made up. Thirdly are the Sunnah prayers and Fourth are the Nawafil prayers which are voluntary.

There are two types of Sunnah prayers:

One is Sunnah Mu'kaddah which are the emphasised Sunnah's so they should be prayed if one has no excuse and it is sinful if one makes a habit of missing them.

The other is Ghayr Sunnah Mu'kkadha which are the Sunnahs which are not so emphasised but still carry a lot of reward.

Then there are nawafil prayers which are voluntary prayers. These can be prayed as much as one wants throughout the day and night except for the forbidden times of prayer which are 3:

1. After the Fard of Fajr up until 20 minutes after Sunrise

2. When the sun is at its highest point (Zawwal) which is 20 minutes before Dhuhur begins

3. From after praying the Fard of Asr up until Maghrib begins.

Note: Qadha and Janaaza prayers can still be prayed at these times.

In Ramadan nawafil prayers carry the reward of a Fard prayer. Subhanallah. That is why during Ramadan we should aim to pray as many Sunnah's and Nawafil prayers as we can. The following is the structure of the daily 5 prayers:

Fajr:

2 Sunnah Mu'kaddah - The most emphasised Sunnah Mu'kaddah prayer of the day

2 Fard

Dhuhur:

4 Sunnah Mu'kaddah

4 Fard

2 Sunnah Mu'kaddah

2 Nawafil

Asr:

4 Sunnah Ghayr Mu'kaddah - Not so emphasised but still very rewarding

4 Fard

Maghrib:

3 Fard

2 Sunnah Mu'kaddah

2 Nawafil

Isha:

4 Sunnah Ghayr Mu'kaddah

4 Fard

2 Sunnah Mu'kaddah

2 Nawafil

3 Witr - Waajib prayer so is compulsory to pray and has to be made up if missed.

2 Nawafil

It is best to pray the 3 Witr as late as possible like just before bed or even after Tahajjud prayer in the latter part of the night just before dawn (Fajr).

The best Nawafil prayer is Tahajjud which is prayed in 2 Raka'ahs between 2 - 12 Raka'ah's and can be prayed After the Isha, or just before sleeping or the best way to pray it is to sleep first and pray it before eating Suhoor or before Suhoor ends.

The following thread will help in increasing the daily Nawafil (voluntary) prayers which carry the reward of fard prayers during this blessed month:

Brother Hamza has got it right. The 4 sunnah before 'Asr are non-emphasized (Ghair Mu'akkada) so you can skip over them if you like. The 4 sunnah before Isha are also non-emphasized (Ghair Mu'akkada).
All other sunnah prayers are emphasized (Mu'akkada) so try not to miss those. The 2 sunnah before Fajr are especially important, the Prophet never missed them and said that they are better than the world and everything in it so please, be especially consistent in praying them.

PS: There are 4 fard in isha, not 2. I think you might have made a mistake in typing.

Asalaamu Alaikum,

JazakAllah Khair for taking the time,

If someone was to miss the 4 Sunnah Mu'kaddah prior to Dhuhr salah (for example - if you make it to the masjid only just before iqamah/2-3 minutes before the iqamah - not enough time to pray the 4 sunnah raqaat) - would it be correct to then make up the 4 sunna AFTER praying the 4 fard with Jamaat?

Also,

Could you or someone kindly clarify the units of prayer for Jummah salah including sunnah/nawafil/fard (and/or the order of things that are 'usual' under the Hanafi madhab)

JazakAllah khair once again
