Events are moving very fast! I was travelling last night and did not watch any news or go online, so I had no idea about the battle.

It is surprising, fighters suddenly appear in Damascus. Last time I paid attention, fighting was in far places like Hama and Homs. The FSA are very good at infiltration.

(Maybe Taliban can learn a few tricks from them )

Allahuakbar. I think many more Syrians are starting to rebel who before would just sit and hope for the best hence the swift shift to Damascus. InshaAllah this war ends soon with the Kafrs brought to justice.

has the western kuffar forces condemned this latest uprising and call for jihad?

or is there some benefit in this for them in the same way that they benefited from the fall of russia in afghanistan?

russia is openly condemning this 'terrorism'.
western oil-seekers are asking for 'mr assad' to step down and allow a peaceful 'political transition'.

one thing is for sure: if the oil-seekers don't attack despite being capable to do it then they see something favorable.

There are various jihadi groups present in Syria and there presence has been know since the uprisings began. They have all coordinated with the FSA and its various factions, sneaking into Damascus, planting bombs etc since last week and they began the offensive once the central command gave the order.

With regards to your concern whether this may benefit the West, it may but only if the UN intervene from a military perspective. The FSA claim they do not need foreign intervention and at this point, there is hope that the sharia will be established in Shaam once more

It has been very effective alhamdulillah (and in many places it is leading Al-Farooq and others) particularly because it has fighters from all over the world, from Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and even Pakistan. It is headed by very experienced people that have been sent there specially. Although it is AQ backed , so people might have issues with it, but so long as its against Assad it is for the best inshaAllah
