Brother, I heard this in a sermon in the week before this. Hazrat Sheikh said that names don't have an influence, but if their meanings are not appropriate then they must be changed. I'll still re-check and post here again. |

Maybe I might have misunderstood something in the sermon , but more or less he said the same things as is stated in these links. He said that names with bad meanings have an influence.. |

do nick names have some impact on personality? If it doesn't have some meaning once its changed. Like changing the original name by cutting letters etc. like for example, calling Ali by Lee, Irum by Imoo etc. Thanks. Calling bad (deragatory i.e. to make fun) nickname is HARAM in Islam: [49:11] O you who believe, no men should ever scoff at other men. May be, the latter are better than the former. Nor should women (ever scoff) at other women. May be, the latter women are better than the former ones. And do not find fault with one another, nor call one another with bad nicknames. Bad is the name of sinfulness after embracing Faith. If anyone does not repent, then such people are the wrongdoers. Shortening proper Islamic names like Mohammad to Mo etc is not a good practise. But to call and adopt nickname out of love and affection is fine and in fact husbands are allowed to have nicknames for their wives (out of affection/love) as Sayyidina Rasul-ullah called Sayyidituna Aisha (RA) Humaira and other Sahaba also had names (which were good) So it will depend on your culture and meaning calling someone MOOTA (FAT) (in Urdu) is not a good nickname for example. So its OK to have nicknames which are GOOD, HARAM to have nicknames which are INSULTING and not good to shorten proper Islamic names (like names of Prophets etc) and GOOD for husbands to call their wives with nicknames etc. |
