"After a long and some what absent period, my college friend rang me yesterday. We had a long and a strong discussion. Mostly centered around the typical issues generally a confused, lost and ‘new’ practising muslim tends to ask. Why follow medhabs? why celebrate the melad? etc. Now back during our college days he was one of those types of muslims who were on the edge, so to speak. In that, if there was any sign of anyone having the slightest indication of knowing he is a muslim, my friend would go-out-of-his-way to display attitudes contrary to Islam and the actions of an average muslim. You may say that he was a scared and frightened muslim. With 9/11 freshly etched on the minds of people. That era of time saw tremendous things unfold on the playing fields of life. which was, Muslims were afraid of being classified or even noticed as being a muslim".

Zakir Naik fans,
Dawa is heart to heart work - it must impact the hearts. Its not arguments/debates If dawa is based on arguments/debates... then advocates/lawyers are the best daai'e. I was a big fan for Doctor Naik, and I used to handle his dawah techniques by hurting non muslims. when I became a part of TJ, I understood what is dawah. By debating with Hindus and proving their religion is false through trigonometry, Vector algebra - you are making them go 10 steps away from Islam. Some people are very much interested in dawah and want to give free copies to entire USA, ALLAH HU AKBAR - what if they read and ask where are the people(MUSLIMS) who are mentioned here? |

thats a good observation. there are people I know who fetch people into Islam through the Zakir Naik approach and then put them off it with the same approach after a few months. Prophet (saws) told us how to do Dawa and it was not through aggressive argumentation.
isn't the deviance of Zakir Naik a little harsh a title though, isn't he just a Wahhabi? |

I read the blog, but did not see any specific examples of 'deviance' written. I just saw lots of words basically saying that Naik should stick to his own speciality and he should not go into subjects that he is not qualified.
My main point of contention with Naik is that they promote Islamic Banking and his programs depict him as some kind of light giving saviour. I am not sure about his dawa maybe it appeals to some people. |

Zakir Naik fans, The aim of debater is to win the debate; at whatever cost. Let me share my own experiences. During a session with majority muslim audience, a christian man quoted a hadeeth regarding bravery of Syeduna Ali RA. The debater replied "Is the name of Ali mentioned in Quran". Response: Big applause from the muslim audience, "we have won it". The by-product: The message taken by many muslims in the audience. Only Quran is authentic, a step nearer to ahlul-quran. Some one from audience quoted a hadeeth.. The reply: "that hadeeth is not from Bukhari and Muslim" Response: Big applause. By-product: Many take the message that ahadeeth in Bukhari and Muslim only are authentic, rest are fabricated. So profit worth a few dollars, but capital loss worth thousands of dollars. |

The "deviance" of Zakir Naik is the same as the "deviance" of our Salafi brothers so I think it is a strong word that he does not deserve. The fitnah, though, comes from his do-it-yourself approach, where people get the impression from him that whatever he says is completely correct and what is said by the poor mullah who only a handful of people know and is barely making by on a pittance is all wrong and baseless. Zakir Naik is amazing at debating against people of other religion but we should not give him a pass when it comes to talking about fiqh or aqeedah since sometimes what he says goes even against the Saudi Salafi stance on things, such as his opinion on the niqab (which he shares with Shaykh al-Albani ). If a lay person listens to him, they'd end up believing that the religion ends with the Qur'an and the saheeh ahadeeth, when the ulama know that it is not as simple, since the Qur'an and ahadeeth (including some weak ahadeeth which may be used for the reasons of sunnah ibadah) are just the first two sources of Islamic law, the latter two being ijma' and qiyas. |

When will muslims learn to appreciate each others genuine efforts overlooking whether one is Hanafi, Shaifi, Hanabli etc! Though Dr. Zakir Naik is really good in comparitive religion but still he says that he is just a "student of comparative religion" and also says that he "is not a scholar". When he accepts it then why all this "debating" about him. No ordinary human being can be absolutely perfect in all the matters of religion, this includes me first and then all the rest who contributed in this thread. Neither a scholar can be 100 percent perfect in all the spheres of religious knowledge. He has mashaAllah done alot good but we should not accept him to be absolutely perfect in all the matters of th religion, neither does he claim to be absolutely perfect. My question to all those who gave a negative view about Zakir Naik is "You must be following some guidance by some scholars, so do you think that, that scholar is absolutely perfect in all the matters of the religion and dawah?"
No doubt religion is ultimately a matter of heart but we should understand that people think differently. Before emaan enters their hearts they want certain questions to be answered even if they are genuinely interested in Islam. The nature of questions and doubts can vary. Dr. Zakir Naik deals with some of the questions that arises in the mind of non muslims. Though Dr. Zakir always says that the holy Quran is the "book of Signs not Science". Quran is a treasure of guidance which also has knowledge of Science as a part. So what is wrong if Dr. Zakir uses some of the knowledge that Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala has given in the holy Quran to answer some of the queries by non muslims? There must be some other daee who are able to answer questions of different nature that arises in the mind of some other non muslims. We should respect each one of the scholars and the student of comparative relgion. |
