I will not be able to make it to the Masjid every night during Ramadan, but would like to keep on track with what they are reading during the night prayers. Can someone please tell me where the Qur'an is broken (like the 30 parts) that are read nightly, in order to get through the whole Qur'an during Ramadan?

I hate to be stupid, but what is "juz"? The words of the Qur’an are primarily divided by chapter (surah) and verse (ayat). The chapters vary in length, and generally are ordered from longest to shortest. To ease the reading process, the Qur’an is additionally divided into 30 equal sections, called a juz' (plural: ajiza). The divisions of juz' do not fall evenly along chapter lines, and often break from one section to another in the middle of a chapter. These divisions are done to make it easier for one to pace the reading over a month’s period, reading a fairly equal amount each day. This is particularly important during the month of Ramadan, when it is recommended to complete at least one full reading of the Qur’an from cover to cover. Below is a listing of the 30 Ajiza of the Qur’an, with links to further information about the chapters, verses, and themes of each section of the Holy Book. •Juz’ 1 – Al Fatiha 1 – Al Baqarah 141 (1:1-2:141) •Juz’ 2 – Al Baqarah 142 - Al Baqarah 252 (2:142-2:252) •Juz’ 3 – Al Baqarah 253 - Al Imran 92 (2:253-3:92) •Juz’ 4 – Al Imran 93 - An Nisaa 23 (3:93-4:23) •Juz’ 5 – An Nisaa 24 - An Nisaa 147 (4:24-4:147) •Juz’ 6 – An Nisaa 148 - Al Ma’idah 81 (4:148-5:81) •Juz’ 7 – Al Ma’idah 82 - Al An’am 110 (5:82-6:110) •Juz’ 8 – Al An’am 111 - Al A’raf 87 (6:111-7:87) •Juz’ 9 – Al A’raf 88 - Al Anfal 40 (7:88-8:40) •Juz’ 10 – Al Anfal 41 - At Tauba 92 (8:41-9:92) •Juz’ 11 – At Tauba 93 - Hud 5 (9:93-11:5) •Juz’ 12 – Hud 6 - Yusuf 52 (11:6-12:52) •Juz’ 13 – Yusuf 53 – Ibrahim 52 (12:53-14:52) •Juz’ 14 – Al Hijr 1 – An Nahl 128 (15:1-16:128) •Juz’ 15 – Al Isra (or Bani Isra’il) 1 - Al Kahf 74 (17:1-18:74) •Juz’ 16 – Al Kahf 75 – Ta Ha 135 (18:75-20:135) •Juz’ 17 – Al Anbiyaa 1 - Al Hajj 78 (21:1-22:78) •Juz’ 18 – Al Muminum 1 - Al Furqan 20 (23:1-25:20) •Juz’ 19 – Al Furqan 21 - An Naml 55 (25:21-27:55) •Juz’ 20 – An Naml 56 - Al Ankabut 45 (27:56-29:45) •Juz’ 21 – Al Ankabut 46 - Al Azhab 30 (29:46-33:30) •Juz’ 22 – Al Azhab 31 - Ya Sin 27 (33:31-36:27) •Juz’ 23 – Ya Sin 28 - Az Zumar 31 (36:28-39:31) •Juz’ 24 – Az Zumar 32 - Fussilat 46 (39:32-41:46) •Juz’ 25 – Fussilat 47 - Al Jathiya 37 (41:47-45:37) •Juz’ 26 – Al Ahqaf 1 - Az Zariyat 30 (46:1-51:30) •Juz’ 27 – Az Zariyat 31 - Al Hadid 29 (51:31-57:29) •Juz’ 28 – Al Mujadila 1 – At Tahrim 12 (58:1-66:12) •Juz’ 29 – Al Mulk 1 - Al Mursalat 50 (67:1-77:50) •Juz’ 30 – An Nabaa 1 - An Nas 6 (78:1-114:6) http://islam.about.com/od/quranin30days/a/juz_index.htm |

I hate to be stupid, but what is "juz"? ![]() That's not being stupid at all! A "juz'" is 1/30th of the Qur'an. In the subcontinent context, people call it a "para". The first juz' is called "alif laam meem", the second juz' is called "sayaqool", the third juz' is called "tilk ar-rusl", etc. If you look in your Arabic mushaf, you'll see the the first line of each juz' is emphasized or bolded or highlighted or marked on the side. |

![]() And the other thing is, there is no set amount to read per night. Each masjid does it its own way. If you ask your local masjid they'll let you know ![]() Usually you can get the rough gist by asking what day they're planning to finish. So for example, if they're planning to finish on the 25th, they'll read about 1.25 Juz' a day. If they're planning to finish on the 29th, they'll read just about 1 Juz' a day. etc. But you'll need to clarify from them, because at some places they'll have an irregular schedule. Like Bro Badrud_Duja mentioned above, at his place they start with 1.25 and go down to 1, and then half. So really you'll need to ask them. In general though, if they're dividing it evenly every day, you can just ask what day they're finishing and figure out the rest. |

I do not see the ع, maybe I'm not looking in the right spot. There are small boxes to the sides of the text, perhaps these are the ruku markings? The marking I'm talking about can be seen to the right of the text in this picture:
quranstand.jpg Thank you MuslimSister, that is perfect. I'm going to print that list out. |

Not every mushaf ("mushaf" = a copy of the Qur'an) has the ع markings. It's mostly in mushafs with the "subcontinental" script. In the type pictured above, there will be these small boxes every 1/8 of a Juz'. So there will be 8 of these in a Juz', and each is called a ربع حزب .
So, in other words, different types of mushafs will have different markings for division. But what is common will be the Surahs (114 total in the Qur'an) and the Juz's (30 of 20 pages each). |

![]() ![]() Sister Amna4, if you don't mind me sharing something important here. Today, Shaykh Kamaluddin Ahmed gave a very beneficial talk about preparing for Ramadan. Here is a little summary (my notes) from that talk as it relates to your OP: It is better to get into habits we can sustain in the long-term (i.e. even after Ramadan is over). It is better to start smaller and gradually increase rather than pushing ourselves to a point where we may burn-out or abandon a habit. This goes for all forms of ibaadat - reciting the Qur'an, praying, making du'aa, following sunnah, etc. During Ramadan, insha'Allah, we will also get a chance to experience a 'surge' but this does not necessarily have to be from day 1 (especially if we are not in the habit of doing something). We can build up and then have that surge at some point during Ramadan. It will be different for everyone since we are all at different places in our deeni development - some may already be in the habit of reciting certain amounts of Qur'an and they will increase it by an amount that works for them, others may not be in the habit and so they will start with smaller amounts... anything but 'zero' - it is a time to abandon doing nothing and insha'Allah a time to make the intention to do things we can sustain throughout the year - so that we can re-visit how far we've come from this coming ramadan to the next insha'Allah and increase at that time again. In addition to making an intention, try to pray for consistency after every salaah and after recitation of the Qur'an - ask Allah (SWT) to accept your salaah/recitation and to give you consistency insha'Allah. So, it might be beneficial to start by reciting less and increasing over time with the intention to finish the Qur'an by the end of the month. That said, don't be discouraged if you can't finish by the end of the month... just keep going insha'Allah. Also, Shaykh Kamaluddin Ahmed recommends setting aside some time after Fajr prayer to recite Qur'an - not only is it more appropriate not to rush back into bed but to spend some time 'lingering' in more worship, it is also a time when we've just entered into the fast for the day so we are likely sharper and maybe have a bit more energy for ibadaat, but also it is the earliest opportunity in the day to erase any zeros we may have and earn multiplied rewards insha'Allah. [Edit: I apologize if I've made any errors in my notes. Those who were listening to the talk, please do correct me if I have erred.] ![]() |
