Yes the 8000 were surrounded by 100,000 romans, but they defended courageously without much losses. Then Khalid bin waleed(ra)'s army joined them, but still were outnumbered by the huge roman army. But the Muslims went on the offensive rather than defensive, which threw the Romans off balance and the Muslims won with the help of Allah Ta'ala.
