Sayings of My Shaikh (DB) Related to Science
Effect of Science Study of science should lead to God consciousness (for it is an investigation into signs of Allah Almighty) but today people are getting misguided by the same. Scientific experimentation should be done by emptying the mind of biases. The right use of our faculties will lead to enlightenment. This includes right use of eyes, ears, tongue and mind. (Sitting (majlis) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010) On Acquiring Science Science must be studied to achieve gnosis (ma-rifat). Today we persue sciences to earn worldly things. (Sitting (majlis) on Friday, September 3, 2010) Purpose of Science Today we study science to make money. If you study it to be familiar with Allah Most High then you will be left praising him to the highest possible levels. (Sitting (majlis) on Tuesday, September 21, 2010) On Science and Its Uses Again Science in its character is a very good thing but we use it for destructive purpose only, as if constructive things are strange for us. (Sitting (majlis) on Sunday, October 24, 2010) In these saying there is a constant warning about uses, in fact against misuses, of science. There is no condemnation of science. There is ample hint that science can be a source of Ma'arifat. There is also some hint in other sayings that study of science should not be given preference over religious studies. This latter fact can not in any way be interpreted as any kind of denouncement of science. It only means that Deen is compulsory and science is optional. |

Mashallah, these are wise sayings they struck me as incredibly similar to the work of Seyyed Nasr Hossein. Nasr Hossein also talks about rooting the study of science towards the ultimate goal of attaining God-consciousness and actually his work, ''The Need for A Sacred Science'' is brilliant in this regard ''http://www.sunypress.edu/p-1636-the-need-for-a-sacred-science.aspx'' as well as his ''Man and Nature: The Spiritual Crisis in Modern Man''. ![]() Perennialism gives me goose pimples. In spite of living in a sea of Hindus we in India have so far managed to protect ourselves from it. For future we Supplicate to Allah (SWT) for the same. Because of the similar fears I have not explored S.H.Nasr. For some time I was fascinated by Idries Shah - who had similar inclinations but the turn his thoughts took in later life left this sinner cold. How can a successor of Sufis get swept away by a hundred year old thing called psychology? So because of this type of reasons for the time being I have decided to be conservative - even if it means that I have to reinvent the wheel in every case. But thanks for the perspective. |

A Scientists is quoted to have said: What my net does not catch is not fish
Meaning what my scientific methodology does not catch is not science. This is the problem with science or scientists who have made only their method the right and true method for discovering the truth, all other ways or methods are dismissed as mysticism or religion. Science is like a religion, its people are priests in various powerful churches (various sub-disciplines and paradigms) with an agenda. Many have lucrative contracts with corporations and or governments and therefore they are no objective or detached, instead they are highly biased and Will full. Science grew in an atmosphere of Mans will and search for treasure (greed and power). If we can unlock the treasures of nature we can gain dominance, often the effort put in and process gave applications for technology, which gave power and wealth which further corrupted the scientists. Ethics are studied by scientists but I doubt if they are applied when billion dollar products can be produced. Religion to the ruling elites of the secular world now dominant is a barrier, something that needs to be over come. The world must be religion free, rational scientific and with the elites in charge. Science is used as a weapon against religion. Religious people are not easy to control, they obey another Lord. Such people are a problem for the elites. Muslims can build bridges and change the situation, but it would take a lot of work. |

Allahma Iqbal[poet] explains it beautifully here:
Science and Faith Once Science said to Faith: "My eye can see all that is in this world; The Entire world is within my net. I am only concerned with material things, What have I to do with spiritual matters? I can strike a thousand melodies, And openly proclaim all the secrets that I learn." Faith said: "With your magic even the waves in the sea are set ablaze, You can pollute the atmosphere with foul, poisonous gases. When you associated with me, you were light, When you broke off from me, your light became fire. You were of Divine origin, But you have been caught in the clutches of Shaytan. Come, make this wasteland a garden once again. Borrow from me a little of my ecstasy, And in the world set up a paradise. From the day of creation we have been associates, We are the low and high tunes of the same melody." http://www.islamicedfoundation.com/poetry/iqbal.htm |
