Default What's Ulema's opinion on medical intervension such as surgery to improve condition?

Lets assume that someone is sick for a long time, and doctors suggest surgery whic is pretty complicated. This person has been quitely supplicating to Allah(swt) but his condition is not improving, so what should this person do?

What if someone choose to get the surgery, and the outcome is not desired and additional surgeries are suggested - should he go along, or take it that maybe Allah (swt) decree is otherwise (I want to know without getting into discussion about Qadr)? How long (# of days) should one perform Istikhara for and is there a time fixed for it i.e. after Isha or before going to sleep?

I will appreciate if you can please respond with Sharee point of view mainly drived from Quran Shareef or Hadith, but quotes from Salaf is also welcome. Any duas or aamals are also welcome.
